Why demand more and why provide more (at increased cost)? Unless you want to make money out of clubsnap, you should keep it simple. What you want is price/performance.
(1) Bulletin board: reasonably low cost to run, low bandwidth because photos are external links. Extremely useful to everyone.
(2) Price guides for photo equipment are IMHO a waste of time. I can simply ask for a CP e-quote or just use the TELEPHONE.
(3) fee-based webspace - if affordable, then definitely since it won't make clubsnap more costly to run. Free webspace. A high bandwidth sapping option and thus costly.
Why bother as long as there are 3rd party freepages out there. So far only openlens has decent bandwidth for direct linking. But so what, many freesites like tripod USA have good bandwidth though they don't allow direct linking, at most you just click on the link to view the pic and the person that uploads must write 1 line of html.
- instead of just randomly allocating webspace to anyone to wants it, you could perhaps allow the following items to be uploaded to clubsnap webspace
- POTM nominees and winners.
- CS photo contest finalists and winners
- any photos accompanying an article that someone has written.
(4) Free email - what, you don't have enough free email accounts want some more???
(5) (local) Outings - relatively low cost / high returns, since everyone bears their own costs and you actually get to take photos. Take advantage of the fact that the (active) CS community is small and grow the 'core'. The non-photographers who just like to look at price guides - why spend effort catering to them?
(6) Photo contests - a definite cost involved, but an interesting experiment - the jury is still out until the conclusion of the 1st contest.
(7) Discounts - its a question to 'see to believe' whether CS can actually negotiate 'genuine' discounts. I'm skeptical but I know some CS members work in the photo business so prove me wrong
(8) Reviews - I think the best review is to go on an outing with other clubsnappers and see the equipment in actual operation. Other than that, there are so many review sites out there, why should CS waste time doing this?
- alternatively, you can use outings as a chance for people to try out others cameras and give their 'first impressions'. This is an 'angle' that has not been explored by other review sites.
