Since ClubSNAP is run as a community, this also means that the FUTURE for the GROWTH of ClubSNAP depends on everyone's (CTM/moderators/members) contributions - in terms of participation, posts, money, etc. in their own capacity. [/B]

Let me start the ball rolling. I am willing to contribute $50. Just let me know who should I address to and the address and I will post the check.

Er, Adamgoi, I believe you are the treasurer? :D
Or is it someone else?

HWZ...I don't like that site because it is not specialized. Clubsnap is different, because we only talk about photography and everything related to photography.

Now might not be the suitable time to start having paid membership method, as Clubsnap must prove itself to be able to give/offer much to the community before everyone willing to become one of it.

What can I contribute to Clubsnap? Participation...:)

Hehehahhhaaa....

Ok ok guys joke apart.. but I think that so far, we have a few very valuable opinion... so Dear user of CS, pls state more of your views..... we need it to grow!

Why demand more and why provide more (at increased cost)? Unless you want to make money out of clubsnap, you should keep it simple. What you want is price/performance.

(1) Bulletin board: reasonably low cost to run, low bandwidth because photos are external links. Extremely useful to everyone.

(2) Price guides for photo equipment are IMHO a waste of time. I can simply ask for a CP e-quote or just use the TELEPHONE.

(3) fee-based webspace - if affordable, then definitely since it won't make clubsnap more costly to run. Free webspace. A high bandwidth sapping option and thus costly.

Why bother as long as there are 3rd party freepages out there. So far only openlens has decent bandwidth for direct linking. But so what, many freesites like tripod USA have good bandwidth though they don't allow direct linking, at most you just click on the link to view the pic and the person that uploads must write 1 line of html.

- instead of just randomly allocating webspace to anyone to wants it, you could perhaps allow the following items to be uploaded to clubsnap webspace

- POTM nominees and winners.
- CS photo contest finalists and winners
- any photos accompanying an article that someone has written.

(4) Free email - what, you don't have enough free email accounts want some more???

(5) (local) Outings - relatively low cost / high returns, since everyone bears their own costs and you actually get to take photos. Take advantage of the fact that the (active) CS community is small and grow the 'core'. The non-photographers who just like to look at price guides - why spend effort catering to them?

(6) Photo contests - a definite cost involved, but an interesting experiment - the jury is still out until the conclusion of the 1st contest.

(7) Discounts - its a question to 'see to believe' whether CS can actually negotiate 'genuine' discounts. I'm skeptical but I know some CS members work in the photo business so prove me wrong :)

(8) Reviews - I think the best review is to go on an outing with other clubsnappers and see the equipment in actual operation. Other than that, there are so many review sites out there, why should CS waste time doing this?

- alternatively, you can use outings as a chance for people to try out others cameras and give their 'first impressions'. This is an 'angle' that has not been explored by other review sites.

I think something that is missed out here is "photographic direction"

I think it would be good to define the level of photography we want to support.

we see the raising of the questions of equipments and reviews... to a large extent, this is to support new photographers, do we have a plan for progression ? or we expect them to look elsewhere for direction when they get competent ?

We could start a blurry shots section. :p :p :p

WAH! We need more members like you ;).

Just to assure all members that we are NOT asking for donations at this point in time - if ever you need to pay a fee, you will DEFINITELY get a lot more back for your money (unlike a certain Forum which requires you to pay just to access at busy times .... :dunno: )

The fee-based webspace is definitely something we are working hard on - we have the hardware, just need the front-end worked out (eg setup procedures, member management, access, etc. etc. and most important - the $$ charges :) ). We hope to launch this within the next couple of months.

Keep those comments and feedack coming in - we really appreciate your participation.

Just curious. I was once a committee member of a certain Alumni club. We were actually a registered society because we collect membership fees. We had to submit annual financial report to the Registry of Societies (not sure if I remembered the name correctly), and hold annual general meetings with members.

If we start to charge membership fees, does ClupSNAP then belong to a non-profit society or a business? What are the implications?

Thanks!

Roy

Roy,
This has been discussed at a recent CTM meeting - we are definitely looking at all the implications before making any drastic moves.

Just to clarify, it is highly unlikely that we are going to be charging membership fees. The fee-based service is an opt-in service to get additional benefits (which are not totally defined yet, by the way) - access to forums, contests, shoots, SEEDs will not be affected in any way for those who do not sign up.
