hi...do u guys experience the CF card read-write speed very slow after u capture using 6~10sec?? my CF card was busy writing & camera show BUSY. miss quite a few shots bcos of dat.. :-(

I never encounter that... From what I experienced, no matter how many seconds you do the exposure, the camera also write roughly the same amount of data to the card.

I shot RAW, 14 secs and I can still continue shooting straight after closing the shutter.

Maybe depends on your camera and memory card?

I prefer the #1. Good picture.

i see... my max is F8... do u think i should use ND filter or blackcard??
i scare ND will not get the colour right... and blackcard sort of take up lots of time... haven't really try black card before

The blackcard is a straightforward technique. You just need to cover the lens with the card during parts of the exposure. Why do you say it takes up lots of time?

Nice pics, thanks for sharing.. happy New Year 2009!

14 secs? you use a blackcard?
Each fireworks only last 2 to 4 secs only. U only release your black card on selected fireworks?

nice work and perfect timming:thumbsup::thumbsup:

Happy New Year 2009

great picture.. pardon me from asking.. where are you located when you took this pictures?:)

check your settings... i too have that problem when I first attempted fireworks at Vivo City... yesterday night.. I was experimenting before the fireworks, then found the problem... I have mine on Long Exposure Noise Reduction :) so... the cam took almost the same duration of the exposure to process the picture... once I disable that feature... wow... speed up immediately.

TS - nice first picture... smoke was a problem yesterday but considerably... decent as some of my later shots are quite clear with the wind blowing... here's one of my better shots -

14 secs? you use a blackcard?

I did not use the blackcard technique at all. The 14 secs exposure was the first few bursts of fireworks.

Each fireworks only last 2 to 4 secs only.

Each firework last a few seconds. Thus my shot managed to capture a few of them. From the start when it flew up all the way till it exploded and rained down. See the trails?

the way i will use the blackcard for my case will be like tat:
set shutter to like 8sec...
2sec expose the sensor to light (which result in overexpose)... and the next 6sec will be cover by blackcard which maybe can help lower the overexpose by the 2sec... so its like for every 2 sec shot i will spend 6sec of firework not capture... (6sec is alot... like 3 chain of firework gone)

i'm not sure if tats the correct way to use... but once the firework "explode" it sort of over exposed on my cam liao... so i wanna lower the exposure while catching a number of firework

Well, you guys must have went there earlier than me. When I reached there (about 1030pm), I can't find any suitable location. I have to settle at the other side of the bridge. :(

Anyway, manage to catch one that I find as not that bad, IMO:

Though, I think, I may have set the exposure a bit too long.

By the way, happy new year to all. :)

In your case, your exposure is technically only 2 secs. The 6 secs of covering using blackcard is the same as closing the shutter.

I guess we cannot advise on the settings for your camera. You can try taking another shot during CNY fireworks. ;)

Wonderful shots bro... may i know where is ur exact location u mount ur tripod?

i think you forgot to turn off the noise reduction function in your cam. U need to disable the noise reduction function first in your cam during fireworks taking.

Brilliant Colours

Happy New Year :D

I don't have a GPS so can't give you the exact MGR. :bsmilie:

Was at the open grass patch beside One Marina Boulevard, and in front of the ongoing constructions. And of course I mounted my tripod behind the railing. Can't describe anymore heh.

Brilliant Colours

Happy New Year :D

Thanks! Happy New Year!

From your description, chengpenguin is right. There should be no difference between your blackcard technique and using a opening a shutter for just 2 secs.

Using 8 seconds just for illustration, it could
0-2 seconds , card away from lens
2-5 seconds, card infront of lens
5-8 seconds, card away from lens

The frequency and length of card deployment, of course depends on the nature of fireworks display and what you wish to overlap in your exposure, as you mentioned in your last line.

Also, it would be easier to use the bulb mode and remote trigger compared to using shutter priority.

I think he has got an issue here because he's using a prosumer, which MIGHT not have bulb mode or shutter release cable (I'm not too sure thou). And also, his camera's max f-stop is f/8, which is kinda easy to be overexposed.

Time to save up for an DSLR maybe? :)
