Poor possession costly for Reds

Ryan Giggs says United's inability to keep the ball harmed the Reds in Wednesday night's Champions League semi-final second leg as AC Milan ran out 5-3 winners on aggregate.

"We didn't keep the ball enough and we've paid the consequence," the winger told MUTV. "It's obviously a big disappointment because we felt we had a big chance. But we didn't get off to a good start and from there we never recovered."

Just as United stunned Milan last week with an early goal, Kaka opened the scoring at the San Siro after just 11 minutes.

"That's what you do on every European night – you try and silence the crowd and make chances for yourself," added Giggs. "For us, it wasn't to be tonight. It's a difficult place to go and they're a quality side."

Giggs also echoed Sir Alex Ferguson's sentiments by bemoaning the Reds' defensive hiccups.

"In both legs, we've let bad goals in and there's no defending that," he admitted. "We attack as a team and we defend as a team and we didn't defend as well as we have this season against Milan."

But despite going into the break 2-0 down, the Welsh winger said United still believed the game was there for the taking.

"We knew if we did get a chance and we could put it away then we could go on," he said. "We finished the game well, like we did in the first leg, but against a quality team like AC Milan you need to put them under pressure and we just didn't do that enough."

Papers: Barton to miss derby
City end for Barton
Joey Barton is out of the Manchester derby on Saturday and out of excuses at Manchester City after his temper got the better of him again yesterday. City have suspended the volatile midfielder following a training ground fight with team-mate Ousmane Dabo. Dabo was left requiring hospital treatment for cuts to his face after the fight erupted during a training game at City's Carrington complex. Manager Stuart Pearce reacted swiftly and has banned Barton for the remainder of the season.

Boss: Best team won

Sir Alex held his hands up and admitted the best team had won as United crashed to a 3-0 defeat in the San Siro.

Defensive errors have plagued the Reds in recent weeks and AC Milan showed no mercy as they strode into the Champions League final.

"We gave away goals very cheaply and at this level you can't do that," the United boss told Sky Sports. "Credit to them, they pressed us really well and were very well prepared. They were certainly sharper and quicker to the ball. They've been good winners."

Certainly, Kaka and Gennaro Gattuso excelled in Milan's midfield and gave Paul Scholes and Michael Carrick little room in which to operate.

"Without question, we were on the back foot all the time," added Sir Alex. "Even in possession of the ball we found it difficult. I think they were better prepared, physically. They've been resting players and that can make a difference. We've had to play the same players all the time.

"For 15 minutes after half-time we looked like we were getting some momentum and had a few shots blocked. But we needed that goal to turn the game around. In fairness, we didn't really look like we were going to score."

The Reds' attentions now turn back to the Premiership, where United travel to Manchester City on Saturday for a lunchtime kick-off.

"You have to put the disappointment behind you," Sir Alex insisted. "That's always been a measure of this club for many years now. The players have handled it in the past and I'm sure they'll handle it on Saturday.

"They know it's a big game and that they can win the title this weekend. That's a big incentive. I think Louis Saha will start on Saturday and Rio Ferdinand could be okay too, so we have some glimmers of a stronger squad over the next few weeks."

Defeated Ferguson admits United shortcomings

Sir Alex Ferguson admitted Manchester United 'cut their own throats' with their poor first-half performance against AC Milan.

United saw their Champions League hopes brutally crushed in the San Siro, the Italians romping to a 3-0 win to scupper hopes of an all-English final and instead set up a rematch of the 2005 showpiece with Liverpool.

Ferguson's team never recovered from the loss of two goals inside the opening half hour of the semi-final second leg, that double blow effectively killing off any hope they had of getting through.

'It is disappointing to come so close,' said Ferguson. 'We had done so well to get here.

'Milan were fresher and better prepared physically but we had to cope better with that situation.

'We had to get through the first 25 minutes of the game without cutting our own throats. But we gave away two sloppy goals. We should not be losing goals like that.'

Brazilian Kaka, who scored twice in the first leg at Old Trafford last week, put Milan in front, with the excellent Clarence Seedorf adding another after half an hour.

Unable to keep possession for any length of time, the Red Devils were on the back foot for long periods and in Cristiano Ronaldo - so good so often this season - they had the game's major disappointment.

'Cristiano had a disappointing night,' said Ferguson. 'He knows that but he is a young man and on nights like these he sees the professionalism and experience of AC Milan.

'It is good to see where he has to go.'

United rallied at the start of the second half without looking likely to get the goal that would breathe fresh life into their challenge.

Darren Fletcher should have done better with the clearest opportunity and in the end it was Milan who scored again through Alberto Gilardino.

The only consolation for United is that they still have the domestic double to aim for.

However, as he spied Saturday's Manchester derby at Eastlands, Ferguson felt his team had been done no favours by the Premier League, who rejected their requested to move the game back to Sunday.

'The TV people were happy to have the game played on Sunday morning but the Premier League refused,' said Ferguson.

'They were worried about the integrity of the competition. You can work out what integrity means.

'I think it was an unfair decision. In other countries their leagues would help clubs to prepare for European games.

'We had a similar situation with the Premier League at Easter when they forced Tottenham to play one-and-a-half days after a European tie to help Chelsea in the Champions League.

'The Premier League shouldn't be interested in the Champions League. They should be interested in the Premier League, that is what they have done with their decision about us.'

Ferguson was happy with the performance of Nemanja Vidic, who was back in the United side for the first time since breaking his collarbone on March 31 and also Louis Saha, who was introduced to no avail in the final 20 minutes.

But one small piece of good news is that Rio Ferdinand should be fit to face City at the weekend after overcoming his recent groin problem.

ok nevermind. Want to suan, suan me as a Man Utd fan. Not when I'm trying to have a discussion on the tougher Milan. U're a loyal Pool fan but so am I, a loyal Man Utd fan. I started watching football in 1990 and I can easily jump on the glory hunter bandwagon and support Liverpool in its heydays and its the most successful English club but i din.

So why Milan is tougher? Their squad is actually weaker than Man Utd's but there are many factors favouring them over Man Utd.

It depends on the team involve. If Man Utd have to choose Milan or Liverpool on neutral ground, i think Milan will be the easier team to beat as they're more open and willing to attack.

wow im surprised u say milan's squad is weaker.
i think milan is a lot better in every department.
defence: they've got khaka kaladze, jankulovski and nesta. all expereinced and good defenders. our best defender is probably only vidic?

midfield: gattuso as their ball winner. solid no-nonsense man and good at disrupting oponent's play. what do we have? carrick? who "can pass" but cant tackle. well, i think we dun even have a proper DMC to replace keane.

attacking midfielders: milan has andrea pirlo, seedorf, kaka. i would say they are all world class midfielders. all smart players. plus kaka is on-form right now, a midfielder scoring 10 goals in 12 games in champions league is crazy. well man u has scholes and giggs. ronaldo? skills yes, but he has yet to mature. carrick? yes he is good at passing at times, but not creating chances consistantly. i wonkt bother mentioning fletcher, richardson and co. cos they are sort of crap.

strikers: inzaghi and gilardino. 1 is a cunning fox in the box, the other is good prospect, performing well in seria A. i think solskjaer is our best striker now. rooney needs to learn how to shoot on target.

well i think that sort of summerize why milan's squad is better than man u. no surprised milan beat the hell out of us, but to lose in this way is so dis-heartening.

but failure is the mother of all success, and ill still be a man u fan. hope all the players can learn something from this defeat and challenge again next year. now they gotta pick themselves up to prepare for the next big match, against chelsea. ;)

tats a very very nice way of saying we played like shyte lol. probably a good idea so the players have an easier time picking themselves up

AC Milan look very much stronger than they last played Liverpool in 2005. This time around I don't think the match outcome is going to be settled thru penalty. From the way they played, they are gonna beat the hell out of Liverpool. :bsmilie:

Honestly with the current squad I am pleasantly surprised they made it to the semis.

With experience the current squad plus 2/3 acquisitions in the summer will make Man U a more potent team next season.

Now lets look forward to the EPL and then FA Cup.

Yeah, I hope the players will put behind their disappointment and give their last burst of fire by beating Man City and hopefully the gunners will finish the job for us by beating Chelsea. At least, the EPL title is almost in the bag and also the FA Cup to fight for. Maybe, Chelsea will end up with only the Mickey Mouse Cupy (League Cup). Who knows, maybe Liverpool will go home empty handed courtesy of AC Milan. :bsmilie:

It was a sad sad night for man utd , the fans all over the world . giving away goals so cheaply in both leagues , poor defensive work and the inability to clear away the balls proved to be too costly , i always feel they should have defend more rather than too impatient to score goals in San Siro . The better team won.

Well, at least SAF was gracious enough in defeat to admit:devil: that the better team won unlike some joker who always felt that his team is better even in defeats. :bsmilie:

man utd never learn their lessons , stupid giveaway goals , duno what the defenders were doing

I don't know if it's a coincidence or not, but all 5 ACM goals were scored to VDS's left. A weakness or what?

Anyway, I think we deserve to lose. The hunger was clearly lacking and ACM were the one fighting for all the balls whereas our players were just waiting for the ball.

agree with u. the fact that man u managed to go into semi finals and stilll has 2 more cups to fight for, im quite surprised, and quite happy actually.
just cant get over the way we lost.

Yeah, lah, it's not easy to be fighting on 3 fronts and hoping to win all the cups. It rarely happens that way. We were fortunate to nip it in 1999 and as far as I know, no other club have done it. I think Arsenal achieved something quite similar to ours except that instead of the CL, they got the Mickey Mouse Cup (League Cup) which should not included. I think we should be contented and considered a hugh achievement if we can win the EPL and FA Cup.

i really will like to see a gattuso and seedorf alike in Man U.....

i still see a weakness in relying on scholes and carrick!

none of them are midfield destroyers...

Scholes and carrick can prolly rotate themselves...

we need a real destroyer and some strong EXPERIENCED defenders!

Yeah, since Keano's departure we have not had any luck in finding his successor. I agreed that a midfield engine in Keano's mould and some strong defenders are essential if we want to win the CL again.

haizz i tink gattuso won the game for milan this morning.Heartbreak:bheart:

hopefully Hargreaves will come to OT this summer.. with his service, man u's midfield will be stronger..

must be last night never drink italian wine...

i only had hoegaarden white......

haiz....

In attack, i think Rooney needs to be consistent to take his chances

Ronaldo can try to be more direct in high balls...he's good and passes but usually short/ground passes where all his trickery is...

Somehow i feel alot more impressed when i see Eric Cantona pumping that long pinpoint ball as and when required!

u noe the major problem too yesterday is:-

NONE OF THE PLAYERS CAN HOLD THE BALL AND PLAY THE ITALIANS! ....the moment the ball reaches their leg and when they are pressured (great tactics by the italians...they sure know the weaknesses of English teams), they instinctively turn into rock and face back and pass the ball.....

if u relook at the way the ACM play....there's so much more flair to it....they show their confidence...they can take any player man on....and play that fella out just b4 turning past him..... its only when there are a couple of the oppoents that come real tight that they have no choice to pass the ball on.....

thats the AMOUNT of space Man U gave to ACM players!...

like i've previously iterated, they have to go up close to shackle to fight for the ball........else like yesterday, end up giving away so much ground!
