How it was won - Part 1

ManUtd.com takes a look back at the pivotal moments in the 2006/07 title race as United claim Championship glory...

- Start as we mean to go on
United lay down a marker to the rest of the country by knocking five past Fulham in a thrilling attacking display in their first game of the season at Old Trafford.

- Blues slip up almost immediately
A set of midweek fixtures follows hot on the heels of the opening weekend, and Wednesday 23 August turns out to be a good night for the Reds as United win at Charlton and Chelsea lose at Middlesbrough.

- Gunners upset the applecart
Four straight victories keep United on top of the league until Sunday 17 September, when a defeat at home to old foes Arsenal allows Portsmouth to leapfrog us in the table. At least we're still ahead of Chelsea *only just *on goal difference.

- But not for long
Another wobble in the league as United draw away at newly-promoted Reading. A win over Fulham in the west London derby lifts Chelsea two points clear at the top of the Premiership. Incredibly, it turns out to be the only time Chelsea will end the weekend on top of the league and the last time United don't.

- Normal service is resumed
The champions stumble once again at home to Aston Villa on Saturday 30 September, drawing 1-1. United take full advantage, seeing off Newcastle with two goals from the evergreen Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

- A bad week for the Blues
All three points are accrued by Chelsea away at Reading on 14 October, but at some cost. Petr Cech suffers a fractured skull that was to rule out the influential stopper for three months. United still ahead on goal difference.

- United step up a gear
A dramatic 2-0 win over Liverpool is followed by a 4-0 victory away at Bolton, featuring a glorious Wayne Rooney hat-trick, and an easy 3-0 win over Portsmouth. Chelsea slip up again the day after our Pompey win, losing to rivals Tottenham for the first time in 16 years with captain John Terry sent off. Reds go three clear at the top.

- The big two lock horns
The Premiership hype machine goes into overdrive when champions meet challengers on 26 November at Old Trafford. Louis Saha puts the Reds in front, but a Ricardo Carvahlo header draws the visitors level. Final score 1-1.

- Reds move on up
9/10 December is a big weekend in the race for the Premiership as United beat City 3-1 and Arsenal nick a 1-1 draw at Stamford Bridge. United's lead at the top stretches to eight points.

- United stumble in east London
Chelsea claw their way back into the championship race with a late rally at Goodison Park which sees them come from 2-1 down to beat Everton 3-2. United head to Upton Park but come up against a dogged West Ham side who run out 1-0 winners.

- Boxing day blues for Chelsea
Yet again, Chelsea fail to capitalise on United's recent slip-ups, drawing at home to Reading on 26 December. United pile on the pressure by beating Wigan 3-1 later that afternoon.

- Happy new year!
Four days later that four point lead turns into six when the Blues are held to a draw at home to Fulham. Meanwhile, Cristiano Ronaldo is really hitting his stride and his two goals help see off Reading at Old Trafford.

How it was won - Part 2

ManUtd.com takes a look back at the pivotal moments in the 2006/07 title race as United claim Championship glory...

- Newcastle with point to prove
The heavy festive fixture list takes its toll as the Reds fail to beat Newcastle at St James Park on New Year's Day, young substitute David Edgar snatching a point for the Magpies with a dramatic long-range screamer. But again, Chelsea are unable to cash in on United¹s stumble, drawing 0-0 at Aston Villa.

- Double slip-up
Chelsea go down 2-0 at Liverpool on 20 January and a Thierry Henry injury-time winner means United suffer defeat as well on their first visit to the Emirates Stadium.

- Three points in it
Chelsea cut United's lead to after 3 points after narrowly beating Charlton Athletic. But the Reds reply with an impressive 4-0 win at Spurs.

- Craven Cottage clincher
With Chelsea focusing on the Carling Cup final against Arsenal, United move 9 points clear thanks to Cristiano Ronaldo's dramatic late winner at Fulham.

- O'Shea Anfield scalp
Reds go 12 points clear thanks to John O'Shea's winner in the dying seconds in front of the Kop. Chelsea cut the lead down to 9 later that evening with a win at Fratton Park

- Keeping up the chase
Chelsea make their game in hand count with a 1-0 win away at City in mid-March and cut the gap back to 6.

- It's as you were
With United again kicking off early and doing their job with a 4-1 win over Blackburn after coming from behind, Chelsea look like slipping up away to lowly Watford, but a last-gasp winner from Solomon Kalou keeps them in the title race.

- South coast horror show
United slip up away at Pompey 2-1. Chelsea had already gained revenge on Spurs with a 1-0 win and so cut the gap to three points.

- The pressure mounts
United's draw with Middlesbrough on 21 April makes the gap 4 points but it could be cut to one if Chelsea beat Newcastle the next day. Thankfully, they don't, drawing 0-0, meaning the gap is still 3.

- Drama, drama, drama
Both United and Chelsea kick-off at the same time - the Reds at Goodison Park and the Blues at home to Bolton. The title chasing pair both go behind in the opening minutes. Chelsea draw level and are 2-1 up at the break. United meanwhile find themselves 2-0 down not long after the restart. Fast forward 40 minutes and incredibly United are winning 4-2, while Chelsea are held 2-2 by the Trotters - United's lead is now 5 points after an unbelievable day in the Premiership.

- Champions!
A Cristiano Ronaldo penalty and a brilliant save by Edwin van der Sar from Darius Vassell's spot-kick late on puts United 8 points ahead on 5 May. Twenty-four hours later Chelsea fail to beat Arsenal and the Reds are crowned Premiership champions for the ninth time.

Reaction: Ex-Reds jubilant

As United clinch their 16th League title, a host of the club's former players have been paying tribute to the achievement on MUTV...

Paddy Crerand – "United have been great to watch all season, the way they attack teams and obviously have scored more goals than anybody else. But I’m delighted for the Manager, after the abuse he came in for from the media at the start of the season, about being on the road out. I’m delighted as well for Ryan Giggs, to think what he’s done is something that nobody else in history has, he’s got nine Championship medals and that’s some feat. It’s fantastic for a team that was written off at the beginning of the season. All credit to Chelsea, they battled like hell right until the last minute but at the end of the day we’re champions."

Alex Stepney – "If ever a team deserved to win the title, United have. They’ve been at the top all through the season, been at the top and I’m over the moon. Denis Law used to have a favourite saying, which was ‘the wheel always turns’, and I think the wheel has turned now for Mr Mourinho against Sir Alex."

Frank Stapleton - "All season the team has been the most consistent in the league and without that you don’t get to win championships. They’ve been there all the way through. Yesterday was a tough, tough game and they looked out on their feet, but they did enough to get through which was what champions do. The expectations are high here, but the players have come through and all credit to them."

Paul Parker – "It’s absolutely brilliant that it’s been done today and it’ll be good to go to Stamford Bridge on Wednesday and take all the plaudits down there, it’ll be an enjoyable evening. It’ll take a little bit of pressure off and it’ll be interesting to see how Chelsea react to it. It’s a big test for them, are they going to go into it full-blooded or a bit hesitant, the main thing is that the best and most consistent side throughout this season has won the league. That’s what everyone should realise. Chelsea won’t give out a lot, but everyone knows Manchester United have been the best team from start to finish. There can’t not be a guard of honour at Stamford Bridge, United made one for Chelsea two years ago out of respect more than anything and Chelsea should follow it on."

Clayton Blackmore – "I’m just delighted. I had a funny feeling it might go to the last day but the boys have done fantastically this season. The big point was starting the season so well and being in front. It’s the way that we’ve done it this year, the football has been fantastic and a joy to watch. A lot of the players like Ronaldo and Rooney are more experienced now and they’re a fantastic team. They’re still very young and I think they’re going to get better."

David May – "A title win’s a title win, they’re all brilliant. The thing that was worrying us was the injuries but we’ve managed to claw our way out of a sticky situation at Fulham and games like that where we’ve had to dig deep, but it just shows the character we’ve got in the players. Fair play to the lads, they dug in at City and thanks to Arsenal today for holding Chelsea. I’m actually with Scholesy at the moment at his lad’s party, and he’s happy as Larry, as they say."

Sir Alex insists he'll carry on

Sir Alex Ferguson is adamant that he will continue as United manager after clinching his ninth Premiership title.

Media speculation at the start of the season claimed that the Scot would leave Old Trafford, while there have been recent murmurs that he could step aside after his latest success.

However, Sir Alex told Sky Sports: "You see the keenness and enthusiasm of players who want to learn all the time.

"That gives you hope and it gives you encouragement that you’re at the right club and why should I give up having some terrific young players and the great history that we have? They’re important factors."

The Boss, who backtracked on a decision to retire in 2002, is adamant that he will continue at Old Trafford for as long as he enjoys the job.

"It’s easy to retire," he said. "It only takes a quick decision and I did it some years ago. I regretted it probably within days.

"Now I feel invigorated by the young players in our club and seeing players like Ryan Giggs, Gary Neville and Paul Scholes churning out every week for me. That gives me the vibes that I’m in the right place and I’m the right manager.

"I don’t know how long I’m going to last but now I’m enjoying it, and I’m going to do it until I stop enjoying it."

Glazers delighted by title triumph

Reds' Chief Executive David Gill says United's ninth title triumph was greeted with great delight by the Glazer family.

After seeing the Reds reclaim the Championship crown, Gill revealed he received a phone call from the club's owners on Sunday evening offering their congratulations.

"Joel [Glazer] rang me after the Chelsea game had finished and was understandably delighted for everyone at the club," Gill told ManUtd.com.

"It's a fantastic achievement for everyone associated with United - it's the trophy we all wanted. It was very important that we won it this year having not done so since 2003 and watched Chelsea walk away with it for the last two years.

"It sends out a big message that Manchester United is very much at the forefront of football both in this country and Europe."

Gill watched the action unfold at the Emirates Stadium at his house in Cheshire. Chelsea's 1-1 draw with Arsenal handed the title to United, but Gill admits the tension was almost unbearable as the game neared its conclusion.

"I was very confident at half-time and after the break when Arsenal looked to be controlling the game," said Gill.

"But Chelsea scored a good goal and from then on the tension was unbelievable - I was pacing round the room shouting at the television! But thankfully it all came good in the end.

"Alex has been fantastic and is one of the best managers in the world," he continued, "but I know he'd be the first to acknowledge the great contribution of his whole team from the players to the backroom staff. It's a great day for everyone connected to the club."

Next season he better pump in more $$$$$$ to retain the title n treble!:bsmilie:

Manager Sir Alex Ferguson wants to stay at Manchester United for several more years after leading the club to a ninth Premiership title on Sunday.

There is nothing like seeing Chelsea players loosing, more so seeing the look of Mourinho trying respond to the loss. Chin up you say, yeah right, you should hang your head down in shame for spending so much and acheiving so little, and the same goes for Abromovich for trying to buy every title. I must say that it is really tough taking the challenge to them. They're like robots, as long the job is done, they dun care and the new standards they set. They're a strong side, mentally and physically. U can say that it took 3 sides and 1 man to stop them. Man Utd for challenging them for the title, Liverpool for dumping them out of CL, Arsenal for screwing them yesterday and Edwin Van de Sar for making sure the title was won last weekend. :bsmilie: And I hope Man Utd can make what your chairman said come true (Chelsea spent 400m to win league cup) in the FA cup finals.

Yeah it means a lot to Man Utd and fans because we managed to break Chelsea's dominance after a tough fight and it gets sweeter when Man Utd was wrote off at the start of the season with just a 18m signing of Michael Carrick after sacking Roy Keane and selling RVN. I'll always remember the media and pundits said: 'Where're the goals coming from?' Just like what Alan Hansen said: 'U'll never win anything with kids!'

I hope Man Utd will rest some players but I dun think SAF will want to lose. This match means nothing but for Man Utd's fans in England to taunt Chelsea's fans. :bsmilie:
