Maldini prepared for Ronaldo threat:

Paolo Maldini is relishing the prospect of his eighth Champions League semi-final and facing Manchester United's gifted winger Cristiano Ronaldo.

But the veteran AC Milan skipper has dismissed suggestions he will be shadowing the PFA Player of the Year at Old Trafford tonight.

Maldini, 38, said: 'We do not man-mark, we have a different way of marking. Ronaldo moves around a lot so he will be picked up by whoever is close to him.'

Maldini has nothing but admiration for the young Portuguese player.

'Ronaldo is fast, strong and scores goals,' said the influential defender. 'He is good in the air and extremely inventive.

'While I may not be as fast as I once was, I can still get around the pitch.'

Maldini insists Milan will not go the way of Italian rivals Roma, who were demolished 7-1 by United in the second leg of their quarter-final.

He remains keen to win the big prizes despite the clock ticking down on a glorious career.

Maldini added: 'I have a great passion for the game. That keeps me playing at this age. I'm very proud to be captain and delighted to be playing in matches like the one coming up.

'All the players are motivated by the fact we want to win the Champions League. That has been our prime objective this season. We have a great deal of experience and class.

'Manchester United are better than they were two years ago but we are there with them and up to the task.'

United boss Alex Ferguson has seen his squad decimated by injuries but his opposite number Carlo Ancelotti refused to concede his team will have a big advantage.

'There are going to be big players missing but we must focus on imposing our game on them. That is our intention,' he said.

'We are feeling good and are certain we can do well. There isn't any worry, just great respect for the team we are going to play.'

Brazil goalkeeper Dida was due to train at Old Trafford last night after suffering a shoulder injury.

Should his fitness remain a concern, Zeljko Kalac is likely to retain his place between the posts.

Ferguson rubbishes talk of Roma repeat

Sir Alex Ferguson has warned Manchester United's expectant fans there is no likelihood the Red Devils will repeat their seven-goal rout of Roma against AC Milan tonight.

After dismantling one major foe from Serie A, United meet a true Italian giant in the Champions League semi-finals looking to avenge European Cup defeats at the same stage in 1958 and 1969.

However, the hosts' chances of success have been badly affected by injury with all of Ferguson's first-choice defenders ruled out, plus Park Ji-sung and Louis Saha.

It leaves the United chief effectively choosing from 11 outfield players with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer the man set to miss out among the experienced stars.

Yet, even without such a major problem to overcome, Ferguson accepts what happened against Roma three weeks ago was one of those experiences that will probably never be repeated.

'It is difficult to think we can get to that standard,' said the Scot. 'That was a once-in-a-lifetime result.

'But, with the players we have, we should still expect a very good performance.

'The players want to reach a high level because of the quality of our opponents. The importance of the occasion demands the best performance to get us through.

'It is not going to be easy but it is never going to be that in the semi-final of this competition.'

With so many defenders out, the emphasis will be on United's superb array of attacking players to get the result required.

Cristiano Ronaldo and Paul Scholes - first and third in the PFA Player of the Year awards on Sunday - plus Wayne Rooney and Ryan Giggs, will carry United's major threat.

And it is a man Ferguson knows well, Gennaro Gattuso, who will attempt to stop them.

The United boss has followed Gattuso's career with interest since he spent a year at Rangers and the combative World Cup winner went so far as to claim Ferguson tried to buy him when he was at Sampdoria.

'He is a player we have always admired,' said Ferguson. 'He is an excellent footballer who has matured really well at Milan in the last two years.

'When he was younger he was more aggressive. He still has that Glasgow narkiness but he is also far more mature in his game.'

Sir Bobby slams Mourinho over penalty jibes

Sir Bobby Charlton has branded Jose Mourinho 'silly' and 'senseless' for complaining there is one rule for Manchester United and another for Chelsea where penalties are concerned.

Chelsea boss Mourinho was incensed that Manchester United avoided two spot-kicks being awarded against them in the past week, while his own club had a handball appeal rejected at Newcastle on Sunday.

Both Sheffield United and Middlesbrough had what appeared strong claims for penalties waved away in their Premiership trips to Old Trafford, prompting Mourinho to say: 'It looks like there is a rule in football that it is forbidden to give a penalty against Manchester United.'

United boss Sir Alex Ferguson yesterday refused to be drawn into a war of words with his Chelsea counterpart but Old Trafford legend and club director Charlton told BBC Radio 4's Today programme: 'It's a little bit silly really.

'Considering he's a very intelligent man, to come out with statements like that is a little bit silly. 'It's a nonsense really. We've played in so many matches this year when we've not had the decisions and they've been quite obvious really.

'But you get on with it, you move on. I thought it was a little bit senseless.It makes good copy for the media and he's obviously a marvellous coach. But sometimes, really, I think some of the statements are quite unnecessary.'

Ole insists: I'm staying

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has confirmed his desire to remain at United, despite recent press speculation linking him with the Old Trafford exit.

Norwegian newspapers reported the 34-year-old was looking to leave United when his contract expired at the end of next season, while Australian club Queensland Roar admitted they'd made enquiries about luring the striker Down Under.

But Solskjaer, who's netted 11 times for the Reds this season, told Manchester United Radio he's not going anywhere.

"I want to play here for as long as I can," he said. "As long as the gaffer wants me here, I'll stay. I have one year left on my contract and I'm not thinking beyond that. This season has been absolutely fantastic for me."

Meanwhile, Solskjaer is looking forward to Tuesday's Champions League semi final and is confident AC Milan will provide stiffer competition than the Reds' last Italian opponents.

"Milan are a completely different team to Roma. Their history and experience in the Champions League will make sure it's never going to be 7-1. The last time we played them we lost both games 1-0 and we wasted a few chances. We learnt a lesson there."

Roma display can inspire Reds:

Expecting a repeat of the incredible 7-1 scoreline against AS Roma when fellow Italians AC Milan visit Old Trafford on Tuesday would be fanciful, but Sir Alex Ferguson believes his team should draw confidence from that quarter final success.

The Rossoneri are in Manchester this week for the Champions League semi final first leg, and despite a glut of defensive injury problems, the United boss has cause to believe that his team possesses the attacking capabilities to hurt an experienced, but ageing, Milan rearguard.

“It’s difficult to think we can get to the same standard of result against Milan as the Roma game,” he said on Monday. “It was a once-in-a-lifetime result. But we should still expect a very good performance.

“At this level, with the players we have, there is always going to be expectation and desire among the players to reach a high level.

“The quality of our opponents and the occasion demand the best of our players. It’s not going to be easy to get through, but if you get to a semi final you’re never going to get it easy.”

United will need to apply the same penetration and relentless attacking gusto of that performance two weeks ago.

“The performance in the last phase was very, very good,” added Sir Alex. “That must give players confidence. Winning is always a confidence booster anyway.

“The team spirit has become stronger over the course of the season as the players get to know each other better. There is a great coming-together of young people, which is always a good thing.

“I don’t have any fears about it. I see the mood in the camp and it pleases me. We’re always looking for signs at this time of year, warning signs about nerves.

“On Saturday against Middlesbrough we saw some anxiety and bad decision making in the final third of the field. But the positive thing was that nobody was hiding, everyone wanted the ball, which is a good sign.”

Carlo Ancelotti’s side will no doubt aim to be compact and stubbornly difficult to break down, but they their defensive stability is complimented with skill and guile going forward with gifted technicians like Kaka and Andrea Pirlo.

“We can’t ignore the ability of some of the Milan players,” adds the boss cautiously. “We have to prepare that awareness for our players.

“But everyone is expecting us to have a go and hopefully score to give us a chance. The name of the game is that you win and don’t lose a goal. That’s our hope and what we are planning to do. It would be a massive result for us. It won’t be easy, but that’s what we’re aiming for.”

i have this inkling that the more they said they won't man mark, the more they will.

its been statistically proven....when Man U feels so confident during their interviews .....eg ... we're ready for this team......we're ready for that team....... that kinda thing, they will FALL Flat on their face....

Right now i think deep down they do feel quite worried about them able to cope with AC Milan...esp Oshea and Brown...(who'd BETTER NOT DO AN OWN GOAL!) ..... but i think that inner fear will drive their senses and adrenaline up...

i think its gonna be a tough and hard game and Man U will play rough and hard...... thats probably the only way to break down the moves for the italianos.....

I dare not think of the outcome, but do really hope and pray Man U will go thru with a good cushion.
