You mentioned you use the 70-300mm with 1.4x converter. So with your 2.0 crop factor, I reckon you have 300x1.4x2 = 840mm reach. Correct me if I am wrong.
No wonder you could get so much magnification.

Did you fire the flash? Your min working distance?
