Did you use flash for these shots?

Yes, external flash without diffusal (so need to tilt the flash). Might follow SiFu's advise to get some DIY stuff for better lighting.

Seen your other shots at your gallery. You have a good eye for composition.

Some comments:

#1:
Eye looks in focused but the rest of the head is not. So as we spoke, try to align camera plane parallel to the subject...either head-on or side on.

#2:
Very dark, does not seem to have the flash reaching it. Saw you tilting your flash head up, so it may not have illuminated the subject. Eyes does not seem to be in focus.

#3:
Good idea for composition there. Perhaps if the left top were something nice to balance the pic. The blown highlights of the perch seems to be a distraction.

#4:
Image details can't be seen, and tail is also blocked off. Eye again don't look sharp.

#5:
As discussed also, try to go at a lower angle, eye level with the subject, and parallel, so that the body will be in the DOF. Even at F14 for macros, the DOF is still quite thin.
