I just discovered that my M8 is suffering from the often reported line across the photo problem.

Looks like I have to send it to Bukit Merah. Anyone else had this problem? Can advise how long I may expect to be parted with my M8? Got a holiday end-November: think I can get it back by then?

While I'm at it, will send in my 50 lux as well cos i think its suffering from some serious back focus... any advice?

THANKS!

Can you post a photo of the line? Also, have you tried your lens on another body?

i would not be optimistic that it would likely turn around in time (by end nov) for you. but if it still under warranty, you should send it back to get looked at, be it before or after your trip. depending on how bad the line is (pls post pic so that it is easier for others to comment), you might / might not want to bring it on your trip. alternatively, you can get a film M-mount camera instead.

as for the back-focusing, be mindful to rule out the misalignment on your m8 VF first. this is not an uncommon feedback of the m8, and can be settled during the same visit to solms.

Line ('banding'?) seems to be a very common problem esp. at high ISO. It happened to my friend's (319xxxx) and mine (310xxxx). Try this: Set ISO to 2500, shoot at a bright light source at small f-stop, say f11. Should there be banding, it would show up at the very first time you view the image from your LCD and shortly after that, the cam seems to have some built-in averaging algo that would somehow make the line (for our case, vertical lines at 40% & 50% from the left of frame) disappear.

I sent it in and you know where it is now. Turn-around time quoted: 14 weeks!:PANAYAMU!! (no Greeks reading here rite?)

You may want to follow this thread in LUF to see if it's the same problem:
http://www.l-camera-forum.com/leica-forum/leica-m8-forum/64077-oh-darn-line.html
Send camera to Solms, it will come back with softer shutter noise & less vibration too if yours is from earlier batch:)
But it will take a while-not likely to be back in November. I sent mine in early July & just got it back 2 weeks ago.
Hope this helps.
cheers

FOC?!?!?!

Yes! FOC! Yours will come back the same too!:) Not shutter upgrade-still same old shutter that goes up to 1/8000. They just increased the dampening of noise & vibration. The difference is significant. It's almost "film" M-like:)

WOW! Thanks everyone for these overwhelming replies :)

Yup! It's the banding like those in LUF! Mine is a verticle line about 40% from the right on landscape. Still in the office now, will try to post a pic when I get home.

sheesh, 14 weeks??? I think they are tempting me to get the 8.2.

As for the lens... I am pretty sure its the lens and not the body. My other lenses (both CZs and leicas) are very accurate.
