LX1 Rocks!!!

I actually used Raw format... but maybe like you say... low light interior shots without flash.... :thumbsd:

Shall bring it out for shoot under good daylight.....

well, all equipment has their relative strengths and weaknesses.. and in this case, the LX1's archilles heel is when you need to shoot in low ambient lighting without flash and the CCD just doesn't perform up to scratch even if you shoot RAW.

for me, that is a real pity as i do a lot of indoor shooting without flash and the LX1's wide angle lens is perfect for that but the CCD just doesn't work as well for that as I wanted it.

to me, it is more of a daylight camera, in which the results will surely reward you.

that is probably why one camera will work for someone extremely well but may be not up to the task for you.

The key advantage of LX1 is the ability to shoot in RAW.
If u shoot in jpg, the FX01 might be a better camera for u.

Actually i prefer to shoot in raw... and once i got the cam... i already set it to raw....

The few test snaps i had were converted from raw.... that's y abit disappointed with the output.....

Hope i can get better results this weekend.
Any more tips??

Now I know why my RAW images look some good at times and so messed up in others.

Hello everyone,
I discovered this forum yesterday and I think it is great. Thank you Weekh for these beautiful pictures.
I haven't had time yet to read all the postings here and I may find an answer to this question I have somewhere, somehow, but I would like to know if I have to spend extra money on image processing software like photoshop and a noise reduction plugin when I buy a Lumix LX1 or Leica D-lux 2?
The only experience I have sofar with digital photography is with my Minolta Dimage x50. A nice camera, but without manual options that I would like to have and that the Pan/Leica camera gives. I seldom did postprocessing on the jpeg files that came out of the x50. I understand that to benefit from the superb qualities of the LX1 I should shoot in RAW-format and do postprocessing to reduce noise. Is there a possibility of free software? Is this postprocessing cumbersome?

Aobe Photoshop Element is more affordable and it should come free together with Dlux 2.
Just just need some good basic software that allows u to process the RAW files. So u don't really have to spend on the more expensive Photoshop CS.

U don't really need to do much post processing. Just some minor adjustment to the WB, exposure and contrast should be able to get u good results. Noise reduction software is good to have but seldom do I use it as I find that it removes some fine details along with the noise.

I just bought the Leica version of the LX1 yesterday. The Panasonics were sold out.
I am doing some experimenting now. Sofar trying to import RAW files into Photoshop elements that came with the camera only gives gray rectangles. I can't call them images, there is nothing to see. I downloaded a trialversion of Rawshooter and now I am able to work on the raw-files.
Looking in detail at the 'raw' rawfiles got me worrying, though. There are dead pixels .Tiny black spots are present on every image at the same positions. Do I have to accept this? in other words is this normal? Or falls this under warranty and should I return the camera?

Return it for another one.
I think u get Element 3 with the D Lux2 and u may have to download an updated version of the RAW for the program to recognise the LX1 raw files.

If I can get another one, won't it have the same artefacts (in other places)? Should all the pixels be OK in a new camera of this quality. I just would like to now if you studied the image of your camera carefully in raw-format and found no pixel-errors.

All pixels should be ok.... it's the same for any camera, whether cheap or expensive.

I like the blur and most time I actually do it on intention as that the image will not be so static. Nevertheless this cam is still capable to freeze fast motion under good lighting.

But I've yet to use this cam as a close up portrait lens.... which don't seem to fit well into the 16:9 format and the great depth of field rendered by the camera....

I know what you mean, this one for example balances better (imo) if I crop the top away until it's 3:2 format. Guess I'm a 35mm shooter at heart. 16::9 is great for movies (I feel like it's two overlapping frames side-by-side, which gives you space for cinematic editing) but the 9::16 "tallscreen" can be tough. It's also tempting to leave the lens at the wide setting all the time (what can I say? It looks great that way!)

Got to keep trying though!
