Ministry of transport will need diplomacy, PR, soft selling, advertising campaigns, public awareness push and a lot of mothering. You can't just run it to perfection as you'll still get complaints from the forever unsatisfied travelling public. And you'll burn yourself up in the process.
Which country don't have train breakdowns and delays? Bhutan. Why? Because they don't have trains. They carry umbrellas and they walk. Singapore people don't like to carry umbrellas. That's the problem.

What has happened is that the government's long held belief that the public transport market could be run competitively, while enriching state coffers in an indirect way, has bit them in the arse royally. Only the naive and foolish would actually believe that ****, especially considering how just about every public transportation system in the world becomes a natural oligopoly.
I think he wanted to take up this transport portfolio himself. He sabo himself.
Anyway, this is really a thankless job. The problems and system failures are not within a minister's control. all due to other people's incompetence and technical faults. He was only a public face for people to throw rotten eggs at.
Unlike HDB problem where KBW can take total control and ramp up the flat supply and finally resolving the housing problem, Tuck Yew can't do the similiar to our MRT problem. The technical faults are too big and too late for him to do any rectification.
If wan to blame, put it on SMRT board of directors, precedent system planners and engineers. They are the ones who should resign.

His future career in private sector will earn him many times the remunerations he now gets plus many more relaxing days for fry fishing and quiet evenings for red wine and a good book in front of fireplace.
It's a win for him but a loss for Singapore.

It's odd how people are lamenting his loss, and his achievements.. prior to his resignation, he was blasted for everything that he did, his looks and there were so many rude comments...

The word 'comfortably' is very subjective.
What is comfortable for me may not be comfortable with another person.
The problem probably started because all the capable senior engineers have mostly left for greener pastures during the stint of the former CEO...

Current CEO of SMRT who was a former army officer earns million of dollars compared to his army days. Does he has the skills to run a transport company? It doesn't matter as long as the big brother is ok.
