Lucky Plaza DSLR Shops Reliability?

I just bought a Nikon D5100 from TKFoto in Funan, I am perfectly happy with the cam. Now I am looking to buy a second DSLR for my wife. I was looking around the many shops all over Singapore and came across a cheap D90 and D5100 in Lucky Plaza sub $1k for both (forgot the shop name).

My concern is, are these cheap DSLR sellers in Lucky Plaza any good? Are the products sold there too good to be true or what? with the prices quoted for both models I am somewhat suspicious.

I travel a lot and really do not care about warranty much but I expect a genuine, brand new and high quality product (unless declared otherwise, but there was no indication either unit were not brand new).

Any feedback is welcome. Thanks

iPhoto lor.

Agree, other than I photo, do not bother with the rest, as usual, when ask for quote
they will give u super cheap price, during payment, they will tell u 7% GST need to pay extra, or ask u to buy a lousy filter for $100 which many shops in Funan are selling for $6-$40 or tell u the camera u're lookiong for no stock and than introduce u a older model but telling you this is better, than selling it at higher price...

Worst case is when you bring your item back, you will notice things missing like battery, charger or worst still camera is not inside the box...

So do you think is it worth it? if you ask me I will not bother with those shady shops, I rather pay the extra to those reputable shops to have the ease of mind

When a deal seemed too good to be true... it is not true.

I mean, look at it this way, when you ask around the price from reputable shops and get a general quotation from them, their price around the shops normally don't differentiate that much... however if a shop came out and gave you a price that is 30 to 40% cheaper than the rest of the shops... then you should really be wary of it.

how cheap are their offers? maybe you list down item by item and post them here for a comparison.

I also wish to know how much their quoto or how much u brought ur 5100? I also wil get one in this few day ;-)

I wont buy at Lucky plaza. never.

the shope at the right side of the main entrance (forgot the shop name though) offered $900 fo the D5100 kit and $980 (i think) for the D90 Kit, i got mine 2 weeks ago from TKFOto (Funan) for $999. I did not bother to ask around Lucky Plaza much after that first shop because I grew suspicious already.

Just as I thought, Thanks for the fedback. I think I'll be visiting the shops at Funan (TKfoto had the best offer at $999 at that time for my D5100kit).

Got my D5100 Kit at TKFoto-funan for $999, most other shops there were 1k+, at lucky plaza i got a quote of $900 for a D5100 and $980 (i think) for the D90

with what kit lens? 18-55 or 18-105? maybe one place gives you the 18-105 and the other the 18-55?

I remember, I asked one store in LP how much for the new 50mm 1.8G and they quote me SG$450, so I just back out and never again ask price in LP.

Hi, any idea how is is D90 now???
Or where can get cheaper?? Thanks :-)

Just call a shop they quoto me 14++

Wow. Looks like Lucky Plaza isn't favored by many here.

If you really think about it, all the popular electronic haunts have their bargains and their tales of horror.

The discerning consumer just needs to be careful and sharp. That's all.

To be honest, even the worst scams here are comparatively mild to other parts of the world.

I've patronzied Aik Seng Photo and Southern Cross before. Once, each.

Aik Seng may be able to quote something competitive even + the 7% GST. I've bought my 580EX II from there at about $600 after round off. Just that I've done lots of testing on the unit before confirming the purchase. They do sell authentic goods (at least to me, because I am freaking extra careful with LP shops). But I must say they lack in service, and they can roti prata the price sometimes.

If you do plan to see if you can get a good deal at Aik Seng, make it your LAST stop. If they quote you something you want, buy on the spot. Because when you return again, the price may be roti prata-ed. Apart from that, if you see that it is authentic goods, no problems, Canon warranty given, it's all good.

My BG-E6 was bought from Southern Cross. The reason I buy from there is because their price was $5 cheaper than all other shops I've asked so far, and I just happen to be there. Service was good actually. I was there, asked out of curiosity. I don't have my cam there, I asked the uncle to get a 5D Mark II body for me.

Without showing any black face, he looked for a 5D Mark II set, took it out and let me test the battery grip. Was satisfied and bought it.

Lucky Plaza isn't the top fav and NOT my top fav either. But sometimes, I may just wonder in with extreme caution to see if I can find a last minute deal there.

My cousin, a novice photographer, once purchased a Nikon SB-700 from Aik Seng at the RRP. To be fair, this isn't a scam, and she was a lone girl who just walked in.

But of course, most of us are aware that we can get it at a price much lower than RRP. Still, at least they didn't pull any tricks on her, which is probably a good thing.

It's either the price have not include GST for body only or grey set.

Some will even take out the battery, charger, strips and cables to sell you back individually

This is how they sell things to the Indonesian, Pinoys (especially sailors)..
