and so what will happen to those kids when they grow up?

are they in for a rude shock to the reality of life? or will they always be living in a world full of silver lining....

point made in first post,

i know a lot of rich kids who are down to earth, they have branded goods, but it's just that they have it, they don't deliberately seek it out nor do they put others down because of it.

that said, there are also many rich kids who are spoilt and snobbish.

i think times have changed...a little.

so the dad buys a d300 for son cos son joins photo club. the d300 is a tool for the son to learn photography so i think its still fine. of cos the dad could have bought a d80 but maybe dad thinks d80 is old model, maybe d90 not out yet at that time. how about d40/d60? maybe dad has a few non af-s lenses which cant af on those cams. well at least the dad din buy him a d3 or d3x. that would be spoiling the kid.

say a child wants to learn piano. so the parents by the child a piano costing $5k so the child can practice at home. is that spoiling the child? is that any different from the dad buying his son a d300?

lol.

no , every kid should be made to use red leaf pens so that they won't get spoilt. ;p

In 10 years ago terms when cameras were not as wide spread and the middle class was not yet as wide as it is now, maybe it might be spoiling. But today, I'd say spoiling is getting him a setup with accessories or lenses that he might not use. Also, I believe that spoiling is a progressive effect. One is spoilt when one only needs to demand for it and gets it straight-away without any work or cost to oneself. If the sec 1 kid needed it to learn photography, then getting a D300, so be it. I myself started serious amateur photography on a 30D that my dad got me. Before that, it was snapping shots off camcorder frames on a family Canon MVX10i. In the end, most of my lenses are self-paid and bought using my NS pay after doing tons of research on the lens. I would be spoilt if I demanded from my dad any new iteration of camera body when it came out or got ultra teles when I have no practical use for them.

Ha, that reminds me of my secondary school classmate who used some crazily expensive limited edition gold plated Mont Blanc fountain pens for everyday work, saying that our usual Pilot G2s sucked. We'd try to hide his pen any chance we get to see him searching for it with an extremely worried expression. If you dont want to get spoilt on pens, you could use some free "MP" pens from the SAF, since every personnel should be issued one at least.

What's there to be proud of?
At the end of the day,the money belongs to their parents and even if they inherit it,what claims can they make to say they earn it?

What good is sitting on a mountain of riches which comes from the effort of others?

Well, don't you know that you can grow money from money?
Sure, they didn't earn the money if they inherited it but they can use it to earn more money, and this is what they have earned from their effort.
If you have all the great business ideas and investment knowledge but no money, you can't do anything either.

This is the difference between person A and person B. If you have a mountain of riches, you can make that mountain grow. If this person does not make his mountain grow, then I would say he is stupid and yeah, spoilt, cos he is not making any effort for his money... just contend to live off his inheritance.

what to do ... blame that we are born too early and wrong family. Blame on our parents why can't give us the "needs" and "wants" that we need. blame on the society thats seem unfair. blame on everyone and start to feel bad and make your day feeling bad. Look out of the windows, there are more ppl out there worse then us. SO what some rich kids got D300 from their parent. So what they are given the "top" cream of the cake. They are still shielded by their folks. Sooner or later they have to face the truth.

Just ignore all these and move on with ur life. Be contended with what u have and u will be a more happier person.

it is ok... if i have children, i will be more than happy if they are willing to follow their dad's hobby

kids will learn life the hard way once they start working part time after o lvl..
they can think aiya stand there sell shirts n stuff..8 hours only..how hard xia..

i got my 1st dlsr in sec 2..was a e-300 kit then..but by then i was way into photography, helping the school out in events which the photos goes to the sch mag..
this year after much scrimping and saving then i got my 1st flash..and only recently my parents reward me with the e-3 body cos i really intend to go further into photography..

kids have to learn how lucky they are nowadays..now im working my ass of to get a new lens or a new flash whatever comes 1st

Well, person A who can make a mountain of trees grow into a mountain of ents:bsmilie: is better than person B but he isn't any better compared to someone who starts from scratches who practically nothing.
The mountain of riches he's sitting on means he has a window of opportunity.
So between person A and say person C who can excel without any riches at his disposal, whose better?

So what if he has a D300? It's ultimately his own life/hobby/career to pursue.. :)

ok.. maybe i have been hiding in my shell for too long.. but goodness me. i got a shock when i got to know about it.

and they were juz like 50cm away from me.. i almost fainted. and i could only afford a D80 at age 25.....

hhaha..in this era...wat kind of thing also have...movie also alot like that situation....so teenager even drive sport car...1 word oni...wasai!!!! haha

my parents did. 7k, and now it's out of tune and I haven't played more than 5 to 10mins per month for the past 5 years. Sian, want to sell away and use the money for photography gear.

so would you say they spoilt you? ;p

no matter what camera the kid owns, at the end of the day... he's shooting in.. auto? P? x:

thats lots of memories!!

i tink lucky or spoilt depends on the kid. if the dad is willing to spend for the child but the child understands the importance of $ etc, knowing humility and not bragging off, shooting like any passionate photographer there is nothing wrong at all.

the mindset of the kid should be moulded properly before pouring a cauldron of gold coins in front of him :bsmilie:

What do you guys think of dads buying D300 for a Sec 1 Kid cos he is in a photography club?

its his first DSLR..

its been an hour since i got to know about it, but i am still frankly, quite in shock...

That's society inequality

That's society inequality

reminds me of what i read on the newpaper today about the autistic boy who died, one who had to beg for food for his mom who would even lock him out of the house and he will sleep at the void deck with no complains. very sad story

you know what's funny
those kids who are well off in the first place, grow up and get into well off jobs and never have to deal with the "shock".
That's life for you, sorry.

D300? good for the kid. Hope he takes some nice photos. it's his life, go make some money instead of getting jealous and shocked.
