Looking to upgrade from 400D

ok, outdated sensor... but when is 50D successor coming? alot of rumours but no concrete evidence :(

Bite the bullet and go for the 7D!

I agree even though 7D is not FF, it's a major stepup from what you're using now. Improve image quality, noise reduction, and many more.....

Check out the reviews for it

I'm using my 7D and i'm happy with it, very happy in fact. Pair it with kit 2 and you get a very delightfully focal length.

Sharp and fast.

What more could your hobby ask for:bsmilie:

Hey!

I guess we have to settle for existing products, as any new successor will be priced out of our budget... Sad~~

New models are usually priced no higher than the models they replace when those were new, unlike lenses.

Not really true, it will always be an increment if it's a stepup. Not much, but significant enough

Always? 5D was US$3300 when released, 5D2 was US$2700 when released, if I remember correctly.

haha, now i try to pyscho myself to get 7d.. omg

It's like buying a sport car if you are too concern about the $$$ you won't buy it, just bite the bullet and do it.

get an upgrade model with features that you think is lacking on your current model and not just because you want to upgrade.

from 400D, i upgraded to 5D coz of better high noise performance & good grip.

I started with the 400D just like you and upgraded to a 50D about 1.5 years after that. I find that it fits my hand better and I very much enjoy the extra wheel at the back. Makes setting adjustments much faster. 50D is a great cam, my only grouse is that I wished the on/off switch was on the top dial, like the 400D. I decided to keep the 400D because it is not worth that much anymore on the 2nd hand market. Besides I like the small size because sometimes its size is a plus. Also some places that I travel to, with the 400D it does not attract so much attention. It still takes grest pictures and gets the job done. The biggest diff I noticed between the 2 is that the 50D has better noise control at higher ISOs. Other than that it is the higher fps, but it is hardly used. The other diff is that with the bigger files it takes longer to download and open each file when you shoot RAW.

Dont be in a chase for electronics. Buy what you need not what features that the next cam has. It has no use if you have them but don't use them. You might as well invest in better lenses. In a year's time, whatever camera you have will have been surpassed by some other model with better tech. It never ends....

im currently using a 500D, for a few months, and im thinking of upgrading at the end of the year. I'm thinking of getting a 50D with 24-70 f/2.8L or 70-200f/2.8L. But I'm also itching to upgarde to the FF 5DMarkII with the 70-200 straight away. I'm also thinking of getting a 580EX. Anyone has any advice? Sorry for crashing your thread, TS.. =(

Hi Fantasy,

Yeah, i really feels that the 50D grip will fit me better. On the other hand, i brought my 400D for a 16 days backpacing trip in Japan is already very taxing for my body. Not forgetting the heavy winter jackets which i have worn. After a day outside, ur neck and shoulder really aches like hell. Maybe its time to build up muscle. haha~~

Depends if you need speed or IQ.

Worrying about whether a 60D will come out soon, esp with the newer tech in the 7D and 1D Mk IV, is understandable.

At the same time, what does it really mean when one says the sensor is outdated? the camera works fine, and frankly it is less than 2 years old technology. It is faster than the 5D II, it has the scroll wheel and on off switch that can all be operated with the right thumb, how convenient. it also has the much better grip and feel compared to the range one step lower. there are many many little things which explain why it costs so much more - you need to use the camera to see and feel the difference.

I have a 50D, and am waiting to see if a 5D Mk III will come out. When that happens, I will still keep the 50D. :)

so, what this means really, is - how long are you prepared to wait. 1 month, 3 months, 6months, 1 year?

The other way is this: Ask yourself - are you prepared to buy the 50D when the 60D comes out and 50D prices drop?

hope this helps!

I took my 50d with 24-70 on a 3 week trip to South America. A lot of hiking and mountain climbing. Its not that heavy la. Sling it across your shoulder with 1 arm through the strap like wearing a shoulder bag across. I find it helps.

Before thinking about whether to upgrade to 50D or 7D, what are the features that you
need but it is not able to achieve with your DSLR? Is it a "good to have" or "must
have" consideration?

Putting the prices of 50D and 7D aside, are the better features in 7D that are important
to your style of photography? Or you are thinking more ex = better?
My advice is to buy what you need.

If you can wait, wait till around Sept. There might be newer cameras announced during
Photokina. Current (older) models most likely would be selling at a lower price then.
Or you have a choice to get newer ones.

Btw, I am still using a EOS 10D. ;p

Cause you cant compare when it was both released. You need to compare with the current prices now

Well then you misread my initial statement, because I was comparing the prices when BOTH were newly released, not the current prices when the later model was released.

I used to own 400D and upgraded to 50D a year ago. For my opinion, I won't wait. For my own reasons were, I need the focusing speed, faster fps and larger body. I had tot of holding on till 60D was out, and I had another reasons for not waiting were firstly, I don't do video and I know very well I won't use it. Secondly, I hated the megapixels getting larger, I dun really like 50D's MP, I prefer 40D's. Thirdly, I don't want the equipment limiting what I want to shoot now. I grabbed a good deal at last year's March IT exhibition, comes with 2 original batt and lots of freebies to offset my cost and makes the deal very worth.

60D might not come out so soon, cos if it is, Canon will kill its own model 7D's sales. My suggestion is, go for it if you have strong reasons to upgrade and I hope its not to make yourself feel more pro... :)

Hm.. actually i prefer the built of 50D the most, fits my hands perfectly.

Yup, read from the forum that 50D should be given a miss. As for 7D, slightly too bulky for me, and the price.

Well, i guess there is no perfect answer to my needs. :embrass:

50D and 7D is same size. the only diff is canon improved the 7D gripping.
Meaning 7D improvement doesn't work for you...Canon must be sad to heard that.... (Just kidding)
