Lomography is...
Photography using a Lomo?
Manz, this thread survived years. No need to associate the camera with the "cult"-ure behind it. Reminds me of people hating some soccer clubs because of the behaviour of the more outspoken fans. The camera is innocent!

Indefinitely, art cannot be defined.

It now seems that lomography has mutated into yet another VON DUTCH, 3-STRIPE SHOE, HALF-MESH CAPS worn INDOORS, PINK COLLARED-TEE, IPOD, SLINGBAG and the like.

oh, and I forgot impulsive BRACES and SPIKED HAIR.

its something u'l either love or hate. and i gotta admit that iv seen alot of better shots taken by lomographers using lomo cams than normal photographers with expensive cams and expensive gears over here in clubsnap. :)

well i love my lomo cams and shots.

Wow.. you have to dig up such an old thread?

Seriously, one should never be too serious about LOMOs or Holgas; they are just like our IS, VR, L, USM, etc. A tool for the time (whichever we may be in)

If you think its fun, join it.
If you have it, use it.
If you don't, fake it or ignore it.
If you are crazy over it, don't worry cos you get pass it.
If you are not amused by it, it's OK, they will get over it.
Whatever you have, enjoy it.

I loved and sold my Holga 120 more than 10 years back. Never fancied a LOMO and no worst for it. However, like many people, I certainly did enjoyed the images/ styles/ colors that mushroomed despite all its under/over exposures, real and faked "crappiness."

I believe that this "fashion" will recyle itself many times in different names.

Enjoy it.

I agree with you.

The Trinity lenses tested to its nth times, the thin B+W mulitcoated filters stacked hidden under the delicated ugly hoods, mounted on the well-reviewed pristine bodies all taped up with expensive tape. And the constant swam to MOs for the latest and the best, only to sell them away "New in box."

A disgusting display of affluence.

Still... as long as they are enjoying every second of it, to each his own!

hahaha man!!! thats a really good one.

LOMO is Leningradskoye Optiko Mechanichesckoye Obyedinenie. and as utilitarian as the manufacturer's name suggests, LOMOs are cameras meant to be used.

i see (and always will) 'LOMOgraphy' as a term coined in an elaborate commercial campaign to sell certain cameras as a lifestyle choice.

but i've come to accept, ultimately it's not a celebration of the user, but the using of.

as the CS saying go .. shootx3 !

don't forget to stop by HUG and say hi hor :D

nicely said!

Lomo and Holga...
They can produce some interesting effects, beyond control.

Some call it art.

IF someone were to achieve these effects from digital cameras, would it be called 'art' too? :bsmilie:

it's true LOMO cameras (lc-a, smena, lubitel etc) and 'toy' cameras such as Holga/Diana sometimes turn out unpredictable photographic effects due to inherent manufacturing faults/design.

very broadly-speaking, your question can also be applied to the following situation: if i accidently splatter some oil paint onto the canvas, when and how does it qualify as 'art'?

for me personally, i believe 'art' is something more than just quirky photographic effects...but that's just me.

which i add, is not to say unpredictability in the photographic process lessens a picture's merit as 'art'.

some great pictures turn out as result of accidents (lens flare, motionblur, out of focus, light leaks...)

LOMO cameras and the likes of Holga have been around long before the hype of lomo.com came about.

if anything, let's thank lomo.com for coining the word lomography, which on a broader wider view (albeit with a tinge of consumerism)....stands for the free-spirited and experimental side of photography.

(in case anyone is confused by the difference between LOMO and lomo.com , please visit our HUG =) *shameless plug for the thread*

i do that a lot with my A80 :bsmilie:

except i don't think i even think at all hehehe

on the other hand, there are many great, thoughtful images out there made on Holga, LOMOs, samplers. it takes a certain understanding and sometimes even appreciating, the limitations of the tool. who was it who said "restriction is freedom"?

*OT* got time this weekend, we go "shoot-first, see-how-then-think-later" k? =P

Wah, seriously ART or No ART....Who cares? Lomo is about the pictures, NOT the camera! Be it VGA phone or webcam, if the picture looks good, THEY ARE GOOD!!!!

Afew year ago when Sony Ericsson used to try to market their camphone like LOMO style, remember? They have exhibitions and competitions and on-line gallery...

Just dun think....be it before or after you press the shutter button!
