Anfield legend Tommy Smith is recovering in hospital after suffering a heart attack at his Crosby home yesterday.
The tough tackling defender - nicknamed The Anfield Iron during his time with the Reds - was mowing the lawn when he collapsed with chest pains.

An ambulance was called by his wife Sue to transfer the 62 year old to Fazakerley Hospital. He is expected to remain there until the weekend.

Anfield spokesman Ian Cotton said today: "Everyone at Liverpool sends Tommy their very best wishes for a speedy recovery.

"He's a legend of the club and remains a very popular figure in the press box on match days. We look forward to seeing him again fit and well next season."

Former team-mate Ian Callaghan added: "I'm shocked to hear about this – he is so indestructible. But he is on the go all the time doing things.

"Only last week we were together for a lunch at the Crowne Plaza. Maybe this is just a little warning.

"Best wishes of all former players go to Smithy who we are sure will be up and about before long."

Odds tumble on Thierry Henry joining Liverpool

After a sustained period of betting on Thierry Henry joining Liverpool this summer, William Hill have cut the odds from 10/1 to 3/1 that Henry will become a liverpool player in the next few weeks. Money has been rolling in for Henry - with much of it coming from the Liverpool area - for the last two days; but there is not a sniff of a rumour in any of the press.

William Hill spokesman, Graham Sharpe's comment was:

'We started to take calls asking for odds for Henry to join Liverpool a couple of days ago and initially offered 10/1, not believing it was that likely a move for the Frenchman. However, after taking increasingly more calls and bets - predominantly from the Liverpool area - we have shortened the odds significantly just in case there is something to the story, which has yet to emerge into the public domain.'

A transfer like this would be a complete shock in English football, and would place serious question marks over Arsenal's short term future. If Arsenal are funding a bid for Samuel Eto'o this way - then surely a straight swap with Barcelona would be less fraught. As when Man United sold Ruud van Nistelrooy it is always easier on the fans if you sell to a foreign club.

But if Arsenal sold to their direct rival (in league terms) they either have a big replacement lined up - or are drifting off the pace. A very interesting rumour - why would so much be staked if there was nothing in it?

For Liverpool signing Henry would give them the cutting edge to mount a serious title challenge. Interesting times.

ohhh what a big rumour. :bsmilie:

THREE STARLETS PROMOTED TO MELWOOD
Steve Hunter 06 June 2007

Three of Liverpool's Youth Cup winning squad from last season will take the step-up to Melwood during the summer with Jay Spearing, winger Ray Putterill and goalkeeper Martin Hansen making the move from the Academy.
Wirral born Spearing, a utility player who has been used as a holding midfield player for Gary Ablett's reserve team, captained the Academy side to youth cup glory last season.

Left winger Putterill caught the eye with some outstanding performances during the youth cup run while Danish goalkeeper Hansen also impressed.

Fellow youth cup starlets Charlie Barnett, Jimmy Ryan, Michael Burns and goalkeeper Josh Mimms will stay on at the Academy next season as third years.

Meanwhile former Academy goalkeeper David Roberts will be looking for a new club after his release from Melwood. The Academy have also announced that Paul Barratt, Lee Woodward, Ryan Wignall, Jon Pringle and Stephen Behan have been released.
