Liverpool are ready to join Tottenham in bidding to sign Ashley Young from Aston Villa, according to reports.
The Sunday Times reports that Villa, adamant that the winger is not for sale, have 'rejected an opening £18m offer from Tottenham for Ashley Young, saying it is nowhere near their £30m valuation of the player.' With Spurs chairman Daniel Levy described as being unwilling to spend more than £25m on Young, the paper suggests that the 'door may be opened for Liverpool, who are expected to enter the bidding.'
The News of the World concurs with that assessment, announcing that 'Aston Villa are bracing themselves for Liverpool's offer for England winger Young, although O'Neill has warned potential bidders to expect 'short shrift'.
'That will not deter Kop boss Benitez, who is also on the verge of winning his fight to keep midfielder Xabi Alonso.'
The paper says that Alonso has joined up with the Liverpool squad for their Far East tour with the deadline set by Madrid for the midfielder's transfer to be completed passing with any agreement being reached.
