24 YEARS ON: HEYSEL REMEMBERED
Liverpoolfc.tv 29 May 2009

On the 24th anniversary of the Heysel Stadium tragedy, Liverpool Football Club remembers the 39 football supporters who went to watch a European Cup final and sadly never returned.

On 29 May, 1985, the deaths of 32 Italians, four Belgians, two Frenchmen and one man from Northern Ireland totally overshadowed our European Cup final defeat to Juventus.

What should have been a joyous occasion turned into a nightmare.

No one will ever forget the horror that unfolded before our eyes that night and, 24 years on, let's all pause for a moment to pay our respects to those unfortunate victims...

Real Madrid reach Alonso agreement

May 31, 2009 · Discuss

Liverpool and Real Madrid have reached an agreement over Xabi Alonso, according to Sport.

The initial transfer fee is €25 million and could increase if Liverpool can come to an agreement with Gabriel Heinze.

Alonso is set to sign a five-year contract and will be presented next week.

Liverpool also wanted to include Alvaro Negredo in the deal, but that was not a viable option, since Madrid would have had to pay €15 million to exercise their buy-out clause with Almeria.

OWEN BACK TO LIVERPOOL?

Here's a belter that has no chance of happening. Probably.

The People reports that several senior players at Liverpool have told Rafa Benitez that they want Michael Owen back at Anfield.

Now, it's understood that Benitez needs a reliable back-up to Fernando Torres, lest his hamstrings twang yet again. And Owen is exactly that man. Ish.

'Influential Kop players want boss Rafa Benitez to gamble on bringing back Owen to Merseyside in the same way he gave Robbie Fowler one final Anfield fling' says the paper. And that went very well indeed, we seem to rec....oh, no, it didn't.

Slightly more sensible news comes in The News Of The World, who report that PSG's Stephane Sessegnon is wanted by both Liverpool and Chelsea, but will set either back a cool £12million.

Also, The Sunday Mirror carries quotes from Athletic Bilbao midfielder Javi Martinez, who fancies a move: "Liverpool are a great team with a great history and any player would like to go there" he said.

WHAT?!?! SIGN THAT SICKBAG ?!?!
