The Liverpool manager said: "The situation is clear, we do not want to sell our best players and that includes Xabi.

"He had a very good season for us and can be an important player in the future. There is no agreement with Real and we want him to be part of our plans going forward.

"Xabi himself told our club magazine only two weeks ago that he was looking forward to his sixth season as a Liverpool player. Why should he want to leave now?"

Benitez added: "Xabi's agent came to see me recently to talk about the future. It was a surprise for me and I pointed out to him there were three years left on Xabi's contract.

"I asked him if the player was happy in Liverpool and he said yes. It was a short meeting."

Though I do believe Rafa gets carried away sometimes - his Mediterranean roots show - I love his sense of humour:

It was a short meeting.
- He came into my room,
- I said good morning,
- I asked him whether he wanted a cup of coffee,
- He said yes, he took my cup of coffee and walked out of my room
- I ordered another cup of coffee, this time with sugar.

There done and dusted in 3 minutes, but I was left -80cents balance because of the new cup of coffee. I wonder, maybe Xabi also wants a cup of coffee! :what:

I hope he means it, and we have Xabi for next season, rather than Barry. It would appear a new forward is on the cards considering last year we had the Keane attempt-fiasco (read anyway you like)... Hm.. what about Kuyt who signed a new contract?? (!)
