RAFA: LIVERPOOL MOOD IS HIGH

Rafa Benitez claims that the mood in the Liverpool camp is "really good" despite their FA Cup exit to Barnsley.

The Reds now face Serie A champions-elect Inter Milan in the Champions League on Tuesday night with reports suggesting that he needs to win in Europe to keep his job.

"The mood of the players is really good, probably better than people expect," said Benitez on the club's official website.

"Physically and mentally they are ready for the game on Tuesday. We have prepared well and I am confident we will be ready for a good performance.

"We know it will be difficult because Inter Milan are a good side who have won a lot of games this season, but we know that on our night we can beat anybody at Anfield and the players know what they have to do."

Asked if he had a message for the fans who have shown him unprecedented patience this season, Benitez said: "At Liverpool the fans say you will never walk alone and I am sure they will be behind us on Tuesday night.

"We know it will be another great atmosphere and I am sure they will play their part. We need their backing and their support."

Liverpool have no new injuries - with Martin Skrtel and Fernando Torres set to return.

WHELAN BLASTS BENITEZ

Former Liverpool midfielder Ronnie Whelan has blamed Rafael Benitez for the club's recent poor form which culminated in their FA Cup exit to Barnsley.

The Reds were knocked out of the competition at the fifth round after they suffered an embarrassing 2-1 home defeat to Simon Davey's Coca-Cola Championship side at the weekend.

And Whelan insisted the recent demise is the fault of the Liverpool manager and not the club's American owners George Gillett and Tom Hicks who have taken a lot of the flak from supporters.

"To get beaten by Barnsley - I don't know what's going on. The performances on the pitch have been absolutely abysmal," Whelan told RTE radio.

"Okay, you say 'now and again there's a cup upset, it's a one-off' but it's not really a one-off at the moment with Liverpool.

"They struggled against a team six leagues below in the round before, who no-one had ever heard of. They struggled against Luton, they're having a lot of struggles at the moment.

"They have no chance of winning the league. And I think the manager is under a lot of pressure now."

Whelan continued: "He spent an awful lot of money on an awful lot of players and they haven't been very good signings.

"And people are shouting, 'get rid of the Americans'. The Americans have backed the manager to the hilt. They gave him £46million or something to spend in the summer.

"He's spent nearly £140/150million and he still cannot get close to Manchester United, Arsenal or Chelsea.

"The players he signed I don't think are good enough. After all the money he's spent they're still further behind than they were last year.

"So then you have to start looking at the manager who is buying the players and picking the team."

BENITEZ READY FOR INTER

Rafael Benitez has reaffirmed his commitment to Liverpool as the five-time European Cup winners bid to salvage their season against the best team in Italy.

The under-fire Anfield chief could hardly have a more difficult task following the wreckage of Saturday's FA Cup humiliation by Barnsley.

With their confidence and quality under the spotlight, Liverpool must confront Inter Milan in the Champions League last 16, a team who are unbeaten in their domestic league all season and 11 points clear at the top of Serie A.

Benitez must feel he has been battered black and blue these last few months as Liverpool have collapsed, and now he comes up against the Nerazzurri, Italy's own merciless black and blue giants.

Inter have lost just three of their last 45 away games in all competitions and are odds-on favourites to deepen the crisis that has enveloped Anfield this season.

But despite being told by critics that he must win the Champions League to save his job, Benitez still believes he will be Anfield manager for some time to come.

He said: "I do not see this as my most difficult time as a manager. I have worked for 21 years now in the job so I have good memories and bad moments.

"So I try to concentrate only on the next game. Obviously I was really disappointed at the weekend, but we must be positive and prepare for this game correctly.

"I feel the disappointment just like any fan. But I must underline that my commitment to this club is still 100%.

"I will try to change the situation. I will support the players and try to improve things."

He added: "The key is to analyse why some players are not performing at their best level, and to try to change that.

"If we want to win trophies, you must not say 'we cannot do this', we must fight to the end.

"As a manager you must support your players if they work really hard. If they do not do that you know what to do at the end of the season.

"But during the season you must support them, work hard with them, and they must compete for positions in the team."

Benitez has taken on board criticism of his squad from local hero Jamie Carragher after the disaster of being knocked out of the FA Cup by Barnsley on Saturday.

Carragher - who will play his 99th European game for the club against Inter - insisted the squad is not good enough, but Benitez revealed the defender was quick to explain his feelings face to face, and the damning headlines.

Benitez said: "I was surprised when Jamie came to me and asked if I had read the headlines in the papers. I hadn't, so he explained that he was trying to be positive. That is fine by me, I know his character and the team do likewise.

"I have talked to Jamie about what he said about us not being good enough, he came to me first thing this morning to explain what he had said and how it looked.

"All I said was that everyone knows we are disappointed, and that we must improve, and we certainly will do that."

And Benitez added: "We cannot change the situation in the other cup competitions, they are gone. But we still have the Champions League and a target of fourth in the Premier League, our aims are still clear and we will fight for them.

"We must think about winning the next game and not about other things around the club.

"Is this the most difficult period for me as a manager? I don't know, but if we win against Inter and move ahead this time will become the easiest.

"But we must win now, that is the only way we can change what is happening."

Benitez will have Steven Gerrard, Fernando Torres, Jose Reina, Alvaro Arbeloa and Fabio Aurelio - all rested against Barnsley - back against the Italians.

"The atmosphere between the players is not as bad as people seem to think, they will try to win this game and I am sure they can do it. Then if we beat Middlesbrough next Saturday here, everything will look different."

Benitez also does not believe his future depends on winning the Champions League.

He said: "I do not know too many managers who are told they must win the Champions League. If you win it once it is normally good enough, nobody here is saying we must win the European trophy.

"We must be positive, improve and stop the mistakes. We know we are good team and if we win games the confidence will soar again.

"When I came here the club had gone 21 years since they won the European Cup.

"Everyone is disappointed by the cup result against Barnsley, the players, the staff, everyone in the club. But we cannot change anything now.

"We must keep going, thinking about the Champions League and fourth place in the league.

"We must progress as far as we can in Europe and make sure we are fourth, at least.

"We have more determination now to do well in what is left for us this season.

Liverpool`s Problem Is Their Lonely Leader

"You get feedback from the supporters all the time. Obviously, they are not too happy about things at the moment."

So offered Jamie Carragher about the recent troubles at Liverpool. Quite so Jamie.

Much of the blame for the club's recent woes has been placed at the door of Liverpool's owners, but more and more attention is being focused on the way the team - rather than the club - is being managed.

Rafa Benitez has received plenty of criticism for not playing Fernando Torres enough, for needless rotation, for his relationship with the Americans etc and so on and so forth.

However, his biggest mistake this season may well be his failure to replace former shadow and apparent 'good cop' Pako Ayesteran.

Ayesteran left Liverpool earlier in the season somewhat abruptly, and turned up at the start of the year as a sporting director at Real Sociedad, a post he has subsequently left.

No real explanation was given by Benitez, Ayesteran or the club, until an interview Rafa gave to Spanish paper El Mundo. The same interview in fact, that The News of the World cannibalised, much to the interest of Benitez' legal team.

In that interview, Benitez was asked about Ayesteran's departure:

"I am very disappointed. When you put your blind faith on somebody and they disappoint you as a person, the professional aspect loses all value, it's secondary. Sometimes the desire for power changes people. I would like to keep all the good memories but the whole situation was a surprise."

Interesting stuff, and Benitez clearly feels upset and burnt by his old friend, but it does not explain why Liverpool currently have no assistant manager.

Ayesteran was a reassuringly bald presence next to Benitez from his days at Tenerife. Together they won La Liga twice, the UEFA Cup and of course the Champions League and FA Cup.

Good a manager as Benitez is/was, taking on the task of coaching potentially the most pressured job in English club football on his own is not a wise move, and the cracks are beginning to show.

From his squabbles with Tom Hicks and George Gillett, to the unguarded comments such as those detailed above, to even his downbeat manner in front of the press, Benitez looks more and more like an isolated man, and the last thing Liverpool need is a lonely leader.

The role of the assistant is a much-maligned one in football. You just have to look at Manchester United.

Their most successful seasons have come when Alex Ferguson had a reliable number two, be it Brian Kidd (it probably isn't a coincidence that Kidd joined in 1991, a year before United's dominance of the English game began), Steve McClaren (yes, he did serve a purpose at one time) or Carlos Queiroz.

Ferguson has been without an assistant in two seasons in recent times - 2001/02 and 2003/04. In both of those campaigns they finished an almost unthinkable third, ten and 15 points behind Arsenal respectively.

It's not a coincidence either, that Benitez's successes have come with Ayesteran at his side. Before Tenerife, his record was patchy to say the least. One promotion with Extremadura is the only noteworthy thing on his CV up to that point.

After Ayesteran joined him, the trophies flowed.

Benitez should not just bring in any old fool to sit beside him, but to try and manage Liverpool without a right hand...well, that way madness lies.
