Harry Kewell is putting in extra hours on the Melwood training field in order to boost his match fitness and earn a recall to the first team.
The Australian international is doing extra training with Gary Ablett's reserve squad and scored for the second string during the 2-0 win over Manchester United in midweek.
The number seven is eager to work hard and prove to Rafael Benitez that he could still have a major part to play this season.
Kewell has not featured in the first team squad since the FA Cup defeat by Barnsley and Benitez revealed that the Reds number seven is working hard to get his sharpness back.
"It is true that Harry came to see me and that it was his idea to do extra training with the reserves to build up his fitness," said Benitez.
"He has a professional mentality and his approach is very positive. He must carry on working hard and making sure he is ready for any opportunity, but I have no problem with him at all."

NOLAN OUT TO UPSET BENITEZ
Bolton midfielder Kevin Nolan hopes to hear Liverpool manager Rafael Benitez complaining again after the two sides meet on Sunday.
Wanderers inflicted the Spaniard's first defeat in English football at the Reebok Stadium back in August 2004.
Benitez complained about the host's over-physical style, famously stating: "This is not football".
Nolan hopes the Liverpool boss is similarly unhappy when he returns to the stadium which has been a graveyard for the Reds in recent years.
The Merseysiders have won just once at the Reebok in the last 11 years - a 3-2 victory in September 2002 - and Nolan is keen for that run to continue.
"When managers go away moaning that is the way we want it," said the Scouser and boyhood Liverpool fan.
"When they are going away moaning that means most of the time they have gone away with no points at all.
"Hopefully that will be the case on Sunday."
Bolton's form is something of a concern as they have won only twice in their last nine Barclays Premier League matches and have not scored at home in three hours and 47 minutes.
That run has left them 16th in the table, three points above the relegation zone.
However, boss Gary Megson has guided the side into the last 16 of the UEFA Cup - they face Sporting Lisbon at home on Thursday - and Nolan believes that proves the manager's tactics work.
Megson was not a popular choice to replace Sammy Lee when he was appointed in October but he has gradually won over the fans and, with their European adventure continuing, supporters are returning to the Reebok.
"The gaffer took a lot of stick when he first came," added Nolan.
"A lot of people have opinions about how the game should be played but the gaffer wanted to do the right thing and that was to play football. He has instilled belief in the players.
"Hopefully we can get the ball rolling on Sunday by getting back to winning ways against Liverpool.
"It has taken this long to get the crowds back in - if we had that support week in, week out I'm sure we wouldn't be where we are.
"We are playing some good stuff and getting back to where we used to be."
The match has added significance for Nolan, being a Reds fan from a young age, and nothing would give him greater pleasure than to win.
"This is always one I look out for," said the 25-year-old.
"Sunday's game is a massive game and whether you are playing the top eight or the bottom eight, every game is tough.
"They are a great team, with great support and a team close to my heart.
"They have a tough challenge with Everton, Aston Villa and Man City pushing for the top four so they are going to come here all guns blazing."
MASCHERANO SIGNS FOUR YEAR ANFIELD DEAL
The Argentine international has put pen to paper on a four year contract with the Reds, bringing to an end one of the longest transfer sagas in recent years.
