Liverpool 'earmark' £26.7m star for summer Anfield switch
Liverpool - Fábio Coentrão in fresh link to Anfield move

Liverpool are reportedly planning a summer move for versatile Benfica wideman, Fábio Coentrão.

The Portuguese is thought to have been on the radar of the Reds for a number of months after Goal.com initially reported that they had shown interest in the 22-year-old.

Coentrão has since been quoted in the French press expressing his 'love' for Liverpool and, now, caughtoffside.com suggest the Anfield club have 'earmarked' the Portugal international for a summer transfer.

Liverpool are currently short on recognised left-backs after the failure of Paul Konchesky to make a lasting impression at Anfield saw him loaned out to Nottingham Forest.

This would suggest that Liverpool will be in the market for reinforcements when the transfer window reopens, and Coentrão would be an exciting successor for the beleaguered Konchesky.

However, Liverpool are expected to have to spend big to land Coentrão, who has a buyout clause of £26.7 million written into his contract, which expires in 2016.

Liverpool, though, have demonstrated their financial clout under the ownership of New England Sports Ventures and are likely to provide stiff competition for Coentrão's other reported suitors.

Real Madrid, AC Milan and Bayern Munich are alleged to be prepared to battle with Liverpool for Coentrão's signature as a summer of heavy spending awaits.

Midfield magician tops Liverpool list of big summer signings
Liverpool lead the race for Arsenal and Spurs target Marko Marin

In the wake of an exceptionally busy transfer window whereby Liverpool owners spent more than £50million on strikers Andy Carroll and Luis Suarez, the Reds have jumped to the head of the queue in the summer pursuit of Werder Bremen star Marko Marin.

Liverpool manager Kenny Dalglish has told Kop fans to expect plenty more big-name signings and that he already has a shortlist of summer transfer targets with Marin thought to be one of them.

Speaking to talkSPORT earlier in the week, Dalglish insisted the spending will not stop as Liverpool’s new owners - Fenway Sports Group are committed to restoring the Anfield club to its former glories.

“The owners have been fantastically supportive during this window, which was busy but I think very beneficial to Liverpool football club," said the Scot.

"In fact they may be slightly disappointed they didn't get someone else. Anyone who had any doubts about hunger or anybody taking this club forward, they're gone now.

"In the summer we'll be looking forward to trying to enhance what we've got."

Marin, a 21-year-old winger dubbed the ‘German Messi’ has been coveted by a number of clubs in recent months including Barclays Premier League rivals Arsenal and Tottenham.

Gunners manager Arsene Wenger is known to be a long-term admirer but a move to the Emirates looks increasingly unlikely as the player could command a large transfer fee – something that Arsenal chiefs have always been cautious of, over inflated prices.

Tottenham fans have been aware of Marin’s attributes for a while after he tormented them during the second half of their Champions League debut, bagging Bremen’s second goal to draw his side level with Spurs.

And with an abundance of attacking midfield talent already at his disposal at White Hart Lane, manager Harry Redknapp would find it difficult to justify the transfer fee needed to win a likely bidding war come the summer.

That could pave the way for Liverpool and Dalglish to swoop for their next headline signing as they continue to rebuild with a view to shifting the power back to Anfield in their long-awaited pursuit of domestic and European glory once more.

actually i would love to see king kenny signing Xabi Alonso.

The leaving of Liverpool

Curry Sauce!!

While he had attained something approaching legendary status at Anfield from the moment he wore a 'You'll Never Walk Alone' armband at Atletico Madrid, Fernando Torres has now made the move to Chelsea after handing in a transfer request.

ESPNsoccernet puts together a list of some of the most significant players to depart the club.

Ian St John (1971)
St John, approaching his mid-30s, was certainly past his best by the time he departed Anfield, and he made just one appearance as a substitute in the league in the 1970-71 season. Nonetheless, his departure to South African side Hellenic was significant as he was perhaps the most prominent of the group that left the club after the successes of the '60s.

After an embarrassing 1970 FA Cup quarter-final defeat to Second Division side Watford, Bill Shankly opted to usher in a new era in swift and decisive fashion, with St John, Ron Yeats, Roger Hunt, Tommy Lawrence and Geoff Strong to be replaced by a much younger side. Journalist Brian Reade, in his book 44 Years With The Same Bird: A Liverpudlian Love Affair, claims St John referred to Shankly as "that *******" as he spent his final season exiled from the first-team.

In October 1970, after a 1-0 defeat at Tottenham, Shankly said: "We will win the title. Not next season, or the season after, but this season. This was the hardest test our youngsters have had and they came through it well, and - remember - this is a new Liverpool. Most of the people here today wouldn't have known half of them."

Toshack put his faith in the likes of Emlyn Hughes, Ian Callaghan, Tommy Smith and Ray Clemence, and signed up John Toshack at the end of 1970 and Kevin Keegan the following year.

The team finished fifth in 1970-71, third in 1971-72 and finally won the title again in 1972-73.

Kevin Keegan (1977)

The new Liverpool were to prove more successful than ever and, with Keegan, they won three league titles, two UEFA Cups and an FA Cup. His final game for the club was a 3-1 victory over Borussia Monchengladbach in the European Cup final of 1977.

Keegan had made clear for much of the preceding year that he would like to play abroad and - although he was quoted in a Sunday newspaper saying if he did not join an overseas club he would want to go to Manchester United - he sealed a £500,000 move to Germany with Hamburg.

He was to be replaced by 27-year-old Kenny Dalglish, a £440,000 signing from Celtic. "I signed Dalglish because he is a great player," manager Bob Paisley said. "He is not Kevin Keegan, but he is something in his own right."

actually i would love to see king kenny signing Xabi Alonso.

I think the new owners have said something and they are doing it by the letter. Exciting players, with long term future ahead. I thought Alonso was good (until he and Rafa decided not to see eye to eye), but he does not check all the boxes (he is 30.. he was a nice memory :) )

Benitez dun like to see him go offensive too frequent.
Instead he want Alonso to defend and defend.
Just like the case of Peter Crouch, Risse, Smicer.. & counting
