Roy Hodgson first combative match with Liverpool FC!

Roy Hodgson admits his first match in charge of Liverpool could prove to be his toughest for a while as he prepares to take on FK Rabotnicki in Macedonia with a vastly inexperienced team.

Hodgson took Fulham to the Europa League final from the same stage last season but he is yet to have time to work with the Liverpool squad and World Cup duties have prevented up to ten of his first team players from being available for the tricky third round qualifier in Skopje.

Players such as the England quartet of Steven Gerrard, Joe Cole, Jamie Carragher and Glen Johnson are not being risked because they only returned to training last week. Javier Mascherano and Maxi Rodriguez are also missing having come back even later while Fernando Torres, Jose Reina, Ryan Babel and Dirk Kuyt are still on holiday.

Hodgson said: "I couldn't have envisaged at the start of my time with Liverpool a more difficult situation than the one I find myself in - coming to Skopje to play a third qualifying round game against a good opponent having really had very little time to work with the Liverpool first team, and not having as many as 10 senior first-team players.

more pasta sauce..

really wish to see young players like spearing, martin kelly, darby make it thru into the first team..

LIVERPOOL AFTER PETROV

If you believe all the talk around at the moment, Liverpool don't so much regard Aston Villa as a rival club, more an all-you-can-buy buffet.

With Luke Young seemingly on his way in one of the more baffling moves of the transfer window, The Daily Mirror reports that Roy Hodgson wants Stiliyan Petrov to replace Javier Mascherano.

Masch looks certain to leave Anfield, so once that deal goes through, Hodgson will apparently make a £7million move for the Bulgarian midfielder.

The paper states - in quite an understatement - that Petrov may not 'seem the most charismatic capture', but fits rather nicely with Hodgson's 'Hmmmm, not bad' transfer policy.

SNAG IN YOUNG DEAL?
But wait, is that Luke Young deal as done and dusted as we thought?

Elsewhere in The Mirror, they claim that Young wants a pay-off from Aston Villa before committing himself to a wage drop at Liverpool.

He apparently earns £40,000 a week, which is news enough to jolt us awake this morning, and would have to accept less in these more austere times at Anfield.

"We will see how that develops," said Martin O'Neill.

"He is having a think about it. If he chooses to go that's it, if he chooses to stay then he needs to start playing because with the new rules I have to name a 25-man squad for the Premier League."

FK Rabotnicki VS Liverpool FC

NoGoal AT THE DOUBLE FOR REDS
Posted 29/07/10 21:49

David Ngog struck twice as Roy Hodgson began his reign as Liverpool manager with a 2-0 victory over FK Rabotnicki in the first leg of their Europa League third qualifying round tie.

The Frenchman found the net in each half as an under-strength Liverpool side overcame claimed victory with little alarm in Macedonia.

With 17 days still to go before their Premier League opener, Liverpool were without 10 of their World Cup players but their blend of youth and experience coped well in a game of little drama.

Hodgson felt his young team acquitted themselves well after coming through a potentially tricky test.

"I am very satisfied," he said.

"It was a game that could have been very difficult for us.

"It was a big crowd and some of our players that played are not used to big crowds.

"I was really pleased with the way everyone went about their business and we can go back to Anfield with a margin of victory which will enable us to feel a little more comfortable."

Rabotnicki coach Zoran Stratev felt his players had given their all but were perhaps intimidated by the reputation of Liverpool.

He said: "Our players gave their maximum.

"They were very good at times, especially in the first 15 minutes, but I think they were scared by the name of Liverpool.

"But I don't have any complaint about our players.

"They played as well as they could but we know Liverpool are a better team than us.
