Manchester United defender Jonny Evans was being questioned today over the alleged rape of a woman at the club's Christmas party, sources said.

The 19-year-old was arrested yesterday following the party at the Great John Street Hotel in Manchester.

Greater Manchester Police were called to the hotel at 4.15am yesterday following reports that a 26-year-old woman had been raped.

A police spokeswoman said a man was arrested on suspicion of rape yesterday evening after presenting himself for questioning.

A Manchester United spokeswoman declined to comment.

Evans is a rising star at Manchester United, making three appearances this season.

The defender spent last season on loan at Sunderland. He has played for Northern Ireland eight times but has not got a regular place in Manchester United's first team.

The Great John Street Hotel is a boutique "town house" hotel converted from a Victorian schoolhouse in the trendy Castlefield area of Manchester.

The Manchester Evening News reported that the entire Manchester United first team - excluding Cristiano Ronaldo - attended the club's annual Christmas party.

The players were reportedly entertained by burlesque dancers during their meal at the Manchester 235 Casino.

They were also reported to have had a drink at the Old Grapes, a pub owned by former Coronation Street actress Liz Dawn.

This morning, the Manchester United players arrived as normal at their Carrington training ground shortly after 9am. Evans was not among them.

Liverpool defender John Arne Riise has moved to reject rumours linking him with a move away from Anfield.

Valencia have been strongly linked with a move for the Norwegian international after Ronald Koeman confirmed his interest in Riise.

Riise has played down the speculation and insists he wants to stay at Liverpool and win a new contract.

"I will stay here,"Riise told TV2.

"Look at the games I've played, the boss would never have let me play those games if he didn't have confidence in me.

"I have to play better and better for each game, then I'll get a new contract."

MANYOO BACK IN FOR BERBA

Just as it was starting to look up for Spurs (two away wins in a row!), The Daily Mirror waltz in and frankly p**s all over their chips.

They claim that ManYoo are set to make another offer for Dimitar Berbatov, but on closer inspection Spurs fans might be able to rest easy.

The Mirror reckons that Sir Fergie will slap £6million, Louis Saha and Wes Brown on the table and tell Juande Ramos 'take it or leave it sunshine'. Or something like that.

Now, if reports are to be believed, Spurs turned down £18million for the Bulgarian in the summer, so whether a third of that plus a permanently-crocked striker and a defender they could get for free in the summer will tip the balance is debatable.

However, the significance of the bid could simply be that it will yet again unsettle Berbatov, just as he is coming back into last season's form.

The Mirror does go on to reveal that Spurs are not without a sense of humour, claiming that they insist Nani must be part of the deal. Good one.





SULKY NIC TO CHELSKI

And if the failure of that bid wasn't enough to make Fergie cry, The Sun claims that Chelski are set to beat United to the signature of one Sulky Nic Anelka.

They reckon that the Frenchman has a verbal agreement with Bolton to join a big four club in January, and that Avram Grant has "claimed victory" in the race for Anelka's scribble.

"Chelsea boss Grant is convinced a £10million January deal for the Bolton hitman is in the bag," they reckon.

Curiously, after clearly stating that Anelka has a 'verbal' agreement with the Trotters, they then go on to claim that he has a 'big four' clause written into his contract.

ALONSO READY TO MAKE RETURN



Liverpool's Xabi Alonso has declared he is now fit and raring to go against Chelsea after admitting his previous comeback came too soon.

The Spanish midfielder's campaign has been disrupted by a recurring metatarsal injury that has seen him feature in just nine matches for the Reds so far this season.

But he is fit again now and with the news that Steven Gerrard has been ruled out of the Stamford Bridge clash with a stomach upset, he is ready to return to action in the Carling Cup quarter-final on Wednesday.

"I would love to be given some minutes on the pitch tonight because I feel I am now ready," Alonso told the club's website.

"I have been training for two and a half weeks - both with the first team and the reserves when the first team have been away - and everything has gone fine. But the true test comes in games.

"I have been tackling as normal in training and I am totally pain-free, so I don't expect there to be any problems if I am involved."

Alonso was sidelined with an foot fracture against Portsmouth in September and returned to action six weeks later against Arsenal, when he suffered a recurrence of the injury.

"It has been frustrating for me," he said. "No player likes to be injured because you want to be playing and training with your team-mates and it is not nice when you cannot do that.

Looking back, Alonso accepts his return against Arsenal may have come too soon.

"It is easy with hindsight but maybe it would have been better if I had come off just before I got injured again," added Alonso.

"I had been feeling a bit tired around that time because it was only my first game back and the match was very fast. But as a player you don't want to come off, particularly when the team is winning and I stayed on."
