Man arrested after Man Utd party rape claim

Police are this morning questioning a 19-year-old man about claims that a woman was raped at a hotel where Manchester United footballers were holding a party.

The alleged assault occurred at the Great John Street Hotel in Manchester in the early hours of yesterday morning.

The man was arrested on suspicion of rape last night after presenting himself for questioning, Greater Manchester Police said.

He remained in custody overnight and is being held at a police station in Manchester.

A spokeswoman for Greater Manchester Police said: 'Police are currently investigating a report of rape at a hotel in Manchester city centre.

'At about 4.15am on Tuesday December 18 2007, police were called to the hotel on Great John Street to a report that a 26-year-old woman had been raped.

'Inquiries are continuing.'

Officers were yesterday seen taking three clear bags from the hotel which were put into a police van parked alongside the building.

A hotel spokeswoman said: 'We did have an event on Monday night. We're helping the police with an investigation.'

A Manchester United spokeswoman declined to comment.

The hotel was closed in the early part of yesterday but reopened last night.

The Great John Street Hotel is a boutique 'town house' hotel converted from a Victorian schoolhouse in the trendy Castlefield area of Manchester.

The Manchester Evening News reported that the entire Manchester United first team - excluding Cristiano Ronaldo - attended their club's annual Christmas party.

The players were reportedly entertained by burlesque dancers during lunch at the Manchester 235 Casino.

They were also said to have had a drink at the Old Grapes, a pub owned by former Coronation Street actress Liz Dawn.

Some of the group then went on to the hotel at around 9.30pm.

ball-lacking is playing tonight.

Michael Ballack has told how he feared his career was over as a result of his recent injury nightmare.

The German international picked up an ankle injury in a Premier League game against Newcastle in April and has not played since.

He was subsequently left out of Chelsea's UEFA Champions League squad for this season after undergoing two operations to try and cure the problem and he has now told how he feared that he may never play again.

"I had thousands of questions, but I was never given any answers," the midfielder told Die Zeit.

"I'm sure I got on everyone's nerves, but my injury was in my thoughts 24 hours a day.

"Sometimes I thought: You are 31 and have had 14 good years as a professional, maybe it's time to call it a day.

"I thought at first that it was a question of three or four weeks, but then everything started to get complicated.

"First one operation, then another and none of the doctors wanted to tell me when I would be able to play again."

Finally back to full fitness, Ballack is in the Chelsea squad for Wednesday's Carling Cup quarter-final against Liverpool and is looking forward to re-establishing himself both domestically and at international level.

"I have enough time to be in top form for June (for Euro 2008)," he told

"After this injury problem, I'm particularly motivated for the 2010 World Cup finals. After that I will wait and see if I can play a year or two more."

difficult wk for Rafa's team

Liverpool manager Rafael Benitez admits his team are in the middle of "a difficult week".

The Reds face Premier League title rivals Chelsea on Wesnesday in a Carling Cup quarter-final on the back of a home league defeat to Manchester United on Sunday.

Saturday sees Benitez's side entertain Portsmouth knowing a victory is vital if they are stay on the shoulders of the league leaders and in contention for the title.

First up, though, is a trip to Stamford Bridge for an intriguing cup clash.

Benitez told the Reds' official website: "It will be a difficult game because we know Chelsea are a good team.

"We also have Portsmouth at the weekend so it is a difficult week for us. Hopefully we can perform and get the right results.

"We have confidence and know we are going into a crucial stage of the season.

"There are a lot of games in a short space of time. We have to keep the players with the same mentality and look to play as well as we can."

Benitez could be tempted to shuffle his pack, with Xabi Alonso set for a run out after a 10-week absence with a metatarsal injury.

Steve Finnan remains doubtful because of a calf problem, while Daniel Agger remains sidelined with a foot injury.

Benitez said: "The key is to find the balance between the squad and the big names. It is not possible for players to play every game.

"Xabi is training normally and should be available for the match at Chelsea.

"I think Chelsea will rest some players because that's normal. But it will still be a good side."

Chelsea also suffered a reverse at the weekend when they went down to London rivals Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium.

However, Benitez has nothing but praise for the work of his managerial counterpart Avram Grant, who has been rewarded with a lucrative new deal after taking over from the charismatic Jose Mourinho.

"He is doing a good job," said the Liverpool boss.

"I remember, when he arrived, people were saying he won't be around for too long.

"They are more or less the same side, they're very strong and create chances while not conceding too many goals."
