I had LR3, and upgraded to LR4 after using the demo for a week. The interface little changes just makes it so much more pleasant to use.

Still a big hole in my wallet. And I will have friends that will laugh at me for paying so much to get the original when I can get it "free". I guess they don't see my point at times.

I checked. You can buy the box, but you're required to send your proof to Adobe so they will send you a serial number.

Apparently so. I checked the comments under the product on Amazon. You will be directed to a website to verify that you are a student before they email you a serial number.

your LR3 is $79.95, + shipping $12.86, upgrade LR4 is $79.95, total spending is $172.76, might as well just buy LR4 full version.
