i don't mind playing long ball if it is effective, that is you know that someone will be able to reach it. Aimless long ball is boring.

2 type of long ball..

1) Target man is there..and u kick a long ball to him. Most of the situation..off side.

2) target man is not there yet...and u kick a long ball to that spot and anticapate the striker is able to run there on time to receive the ball. No offside. typical example....berger long kick and owen chase the ball. and owen scored. heskey long kick the ball...owen chase the ball...forced the brazilian defender to make error and deflected the ball from the hips..and drop the ball on the ground and owen grab the opportunities to score..Goal...England leading brazil 1-0, in 2002 world cup.

Would u say 2) is absolutely aimless ?

It will be interesting if both baros and owen end up in Everton.. :P
could be..when baros and owen both turn 35...they could still do a job for everton...muahahaaa

cannot la!

EVERTON likes their striker tall and big! DUNCAN FERGUSON!

Aimless means kicking it into no man's land, impossible for someone to chase even. It also mean kicking it to someone in an offside position.

sounds like Bolton tactics, which work very well.

Hmm, here their OTHER options:

John Carew
Jan Koller
Shaquille O'Neal

Actually the best practitioners of the long ball game in the EPL that I can remember was the old Wimbledon.

They were very hard to play against

you just highlighted the problem with that lad. he really is the most injury prone defender i have ever seen on TV. :bsmilie:
Yup... 2nd most injury prone player after our own skipper, Jamie Rednapp...

One thing though, our physio, Dave Galey, left for Derby.... I think it's good.. since during his time, we seems to have a lot of long term injuries, including the Kewell fiasco... not sure is it his fault but a new physio may be good for us..

Dennis Rodman. Come to think of it, both look alike. :bsmilie:

My concept of long ball:

Long ball: Pump balls whenever a chance comes into the penalty box even the ball was won in midfield.

Counterattack: Defend and soak up oppsition's attack and pressure, when the chance come, pump a long ball into the path of a striker or Att midfielder.

So i think only the lower divisions play long ball. Not much skill is required.

Counterattack are used by teams like the GH's Liverpool. The defenders and midfield are under lots of pressure and require skills. Actually, many teams use counterattack. Arsenal's has got the best style in the world. So i think it is not right to say that GH's Liverpool plays long ball. Its just that they're boring (Mostly Owen attacks) and not as beautiful as Arsenal's. (Sweeping one touch football)

when chelsea win 1-0..tighten the defence, rely rubben and duff fast pace counter attack and won EPL..they are doing counter attack ok.

but when liverpool win 1-0..tighten the defence, rely owen fast pace counter attack and but failed EPL..they are not doing ok, theyare boring...

see...if u win EPL , your tactics are the best.

but if u did not EPL, your similiar tactics sucked.

it is not about the long ball nor counter attack....at the end ..the result speaks.

I only care about 3 points..regardless we win it ugly, boring or dirty.

Those are crosses. Man i am wondering what kinda football you watched! Or you dun understand what is counterattack and long ball?

Chelsea also got flak for winning 1-0 often if you remember. They do not have the most entertaining style. Arsenal does.

Liverpool was called boring because they're a big club and they used to play entertaining football. It was so un-liverpool like.

Winning 3 points by ugly, boring or dirty are only resorted by smaller unfancied clubs. Even an Italian club; AC Milan attacks! Its true that results speaks but its also how you win it. Greece are Euro champions but how they do it? Are they regarded as successful and worthy champions?

true, that is why when liverpool meets chelsea in champions league, they literally beat chelsea at their own game!

we beat chelsea 1-0 and 0-0..and beat milan 3-3 with penalty won us European Champion. WE are playing beauty football.

we beat baca 1-0 and 0-0, and meet alaves and beat them 5-4 , won UEFA Cup.
but We are playing long ball, boring football.

whether is about long ball....short pass.....total football...counterattack...all manager play to win..

the ultimate destination is to win..not to entertain..

as long as u win...u are da best. Just like Jose.."i am the special one. If u can trust on European Champion Manager..who can u trust." hahahaaa....

Now Rafa is the special one.

Instead of debating the style of play, now my greatest wish is that every team will concentrate on trying to beat chelsea...... and meanwhile, we slowly climb to top of table... hehehe

Frankly speaking, I am wondering why all of us are talking so much about Chelsea being too strong. Just as long as Liverpool can beat the rest of the EPL teams, and able to hold Chelsea, Liverpool will be able to win the league title. Even if Chelsea is "so strong" that Liverpool lost twice to Chelsea, by winning the rest of the other games will still ensure the league title.

Granted that Chelsea has the $$ to create a very strong squad, I feel that Arsenal and Man U is about the same strength as Liverpool. So if Liverpool can beat Arsenal and Man U, and avoid dropping silly points against other teams, Liverpool will still have a very strong chance to win the title.
