So any picture quality to compare bw the 2? :)
lol a bit stupid to have both ah I feel.. but yeah, i guess it's like owning a toyota and a lamborghini.. both are good cars, both gets you from pt A to pt B, one is a daily driver and the other, you use only when you feel like living the life that day LOL

the only thing that bothers me is that the 45mm is made in vietnam.. so far so good though, thoroughly tested the lens before making that purchase and it looks like a sharp copy indeed.

and wow, the size difference between the 2 is HUGE

Here's a blind test. 45mm vs 42.5mm under relatively poor light. Not gonna tell which was taken with which lens, but both taken at f1.8, all other settings remain constant.

I think that the 45 should have warmer colours:)? I may be wrong! Anyway I'm more distracted by the lens hood below. The 12-40 (split in two), 75 and 42.5? That's a collection of fine lens and quite a fortune haha!

hahaha the petal shaped lens hood belongs to my Pana 14-140mm, rly good versatile day light lens.

but what you mentioned did bring to my attention the fact that pic B looks slightly warmer than pic A. it shouldnt be the case right? I suspect because it's auto white balance, the camera adjusted it a bit during the lens change

Assuming u mounted in on a tripod, A should be 45mm, while B should be 42.5mm due to the fact that A was slightly more closed up. Other than that both IQ were about the same.

about $1.4k SGD if buy from Japan.

BIC Camera 140,540yen - 5% Visa rebte + 8% Tax rebate.

I have to go to japan to buy? Can buy online? Dont give me the BBB virus! :D

hehe. yeah. cannot justify the price.

but the Olympus 45mm f1.8 not bad too.

If I did not have the 75mm I may get the 45mm but I have it already and very happy with it even though it is a less usable focal length. I have convinced myself that I want the 42.5mm but the price is not justifiable for me.

Having a car in aus is also taking some of the budget. If I was in SG without a car it might have been a different story :D

Hmmm maybe the web version decreases the quality? In other reviews 42.5mm beats the 45mm in all aspects. The only time when 45mm gets close is in the center but it still cannot surpass the 42.5mm. Maybe we need to level up as well to see if its better in quality. Otherwise if cannot differentiate then can stick with 45mm.

buy online from amazon.jp..but that will include shipping fee + GST since its over $300 :bsmilie:

yes. u need to go Japan to buy :bsmilie:

That decreases the bbb a bit hehe. As other forums say, this is a WANT lens not a need lens :D

the oly 45mm f1.8 is also a very good lens.so small in size..only thing i dont like.. plastic! hehe. perfect if its like the 17mm F1.8

AND... the Nocticron has a proud "Made in Japan" badge.. can't say the same for the 45mm (silver one from china, black one from vietnam) But really, balls stroking purposes aside, the 45mm being so cheap, it's a worthwhile lens to have. $260 won't make you richer or poorer anyway.

Here's a 100% crop of both pictures. I chose this spot because this was where it was focused at.

You can start to tell, one is ever so slightly sharper than the other.. Although as portrayed in my earlier post, if the picture is meant to end up resized for facebook etc etc.. you can barely tell.

Ending up this is comparing a specialized lens against an everyday lens :) comparisons is tough too, given that u have users who are fussy down to how sharp edges falloff into bokeh areas , how rounded the bokeh can be or just simply general sharpness worthy of Facebook posting.

I've seen many people tearing their hair out comparing the fuji XF56/1.2 and XF56/1.2 APD to start with lol. One costs $1000, the other $2100.

For everyday casual shoots where someone doesn't need the f1.2 sharp across corners quality , the 45/1.8 is really a lens that's hard to beat given that it's a tiny lens in comparison and a small fraction of the 42.5/1.2's price.

I figure if I were to take a 12-32 and a 12-40 and compare them at the same aperture, most people will be hard pressed to tell the diff as both are very good lenses to start with.

End of the day it's really down to individual needs for the images u create.

So B is the 42.5 and A is the 45? Actually really cannot tell the difference haha.. The bokeh is slightly different but cannot tell which belongs to which

The idea is not really to identify which is Nocticron which is M zuiko.. But more of.. You can't tell the difference between the end results of the 2.. which means spending the extra $1700 is something you really need to think about.

But of course, we haven't gone into even poorer light scenarios yet, and that's where the Noct shines

Lol... That's not the best way to test the lens.

if anyone interested... later 1250am amazon got lightning deal for this lens... it's currently USD1397.99... wonder how much lower it'll be...? oh and free shipping to singapore.... ;)

oh and don't forget the GST...

regards,
wacky
