let guess the price of 42.5mm nocticorn and who want to get it?

hi all i am contemplating to get the em1 with this lens. my wife and son are my main subjects. may i know what would be distance between me and son in order to get a full body shot? is it far?

I would reckon somewhere in the 4 meter vicinity. Granted I shoot with a 75mm equivalent ff, expect to stand abit farther with an 85mm ff equivalent to get full body

The upside is you get to be less "invasive" especially when shooting candids of them!

Why not consider the 25mm pana-leica instead for those kind of shots? Cheaper too.

For me 42.5mm is like the 75mm but more usable. However the price is too much so that makes me not part of the target market of this lens. If you are willing to buy this lens then you are part of the target market and nothing is stopping you from buying it

i dont have deep pockets but i dont mind spending a little more on a lens that i will keep it for a long time. the distance is a little put off for me as sometimes i shoot him at home and i dont live in a eat wind house

Too far or too near is subjective. The key word is getting used to it

Anyone starting with the 17/1.8 will find the 45/1.8 too far until u experience the 75/1.8. And the once u get used to the 75/1.8, all ok liao.

The 12-40/2.8 will be hard pressed to produce such a bokeh though it's really a fast lens with great sharpness. The 17 and 25 maybe but another key consideration is corner to corner sharpness shooting wide open which the 42.5 performs admirably.

The 75/1.8 is no slouch either being able to produce as good DOF and of course either the ranked no.1 or no.2 coming to sharpness in the MFT lens lineup.

You are right about 75mm. At first it is too tight but once you get used to it you worry about not having extra reach. You can take photos without invading space and 75mm I think is the correct flattering as for full frame it is 85mm right? The only difference is the reach is like 150mm and the dof is like f3.6 altho light gathering is still f1.8.

While the 42.5mm is still a 50mm lens so not as flattering as the 75mm. That is the wierd thing about m4/3. The lens is still a true 42.5mm or 75mm lens with same light gathering but reach and dof are both doubled.

Used to use the 45/1.8 only but was told by one of the seniors here that once I get used to the 75mm , nothing else comes close. He was right haha. Anyway, the newly released 42.5 is on par or even slightly better

The beauty of the 75 is that u r perfectly right, it does not invade anyone's privacy. I've used it at 300mm to shoot street before and nicely isolated the subject from the background (yes stalker I know but don't judge la). The 150mm FL allows one to blur out the background 'creamily' too.

Yes, the light gathering abilities are true f1.8 and f1.2 for the 75 and 42.5mm. Difference is the possible DOF but at their FL, I don't really see that I've lost much possible DOF when compared with larger sensor cameras though I'm sure there will be people who will always argue spec wise confirm got a huge chasm of difference it's how we use the equipment. No offense but I've friends who use APS-C bodies on iAuto mode.

I'm not very technically competent , and will just shoot whatever works for me and if it doesn't work , I'll find out how to overcome it.

End of the day I guess I can say both the 42.5 and 75 are great lenses , everyone wishes to own the 42.5 because it's a easier to manage FL but it bring pricey will make the 75 relatively more affordable and if one is focused enough, the 150mm FL isn't an issue. Both are still lenses I believe anyone will hope to own.

And .. Pragmatically, Haha I think most people will end up buying the 45/1.8 instead given current prices.

Totally agree with everything shared but to some, being pragmatic is NOT the key. Its to explore the limit of possibilities and given the wonderful f1.2 aperture will surely tempt the diehard and the enthusiast. If really want to be practical, the kit zoom lens in the hand of expert is good enough than whatever exotic I have. Just look at Ming Thein website and how he uses the Oly kit zoom haha. I think if price drop to $1600 to 1700 lvl, there will be a lot of new owners hehe

Do consider 25mm F1.8 which produces good bokeh and sharper IQ. Or you can use 12-40mm that is versatile for landscape,portrait, family shoot and its bokeh is not that bad but its IQ is quite good.
75mm is too much for you although its IQ and bokeh are quite wow-wow but it is suitable for concert, night shoot and indoor events.
For a good start, go test either 12-40mm or 25mm F1.8.

If you use the kit lens you need to spend more effort editing. A better lens will make it easier for you to take better pictures. You do not need to justify to us something you can afford. That is what is the wife is for not us.

I can push myself to get this lens but will have to sacrifice other things which am not willing to do so. If the price was lower then it would be easier for me to try it out. It is a blessing that there are cheaper equivalents when this lens came out.

It's superb , just that as shared long ago here I'm happy with my 75mm but if anyone can spend the extra for this beauty , why not ?
