There's also the 70-300 IS USM without the diffractive optics. Its much cheaper, though heavier and not as compact. IQ doesn't match up to its DO cousin, but it still falls under the mid-consumer range for me.

One lens I'm waiting to look at is the EF-S 55-250 IS.

Special in a way that it has Diffractive Optics and it's very compact with IS. I've tried the 400mm DO IS before too and i was impressed cos it's so light, you can even handhold it for your shoots.

plus the price for DO lens is not cheap as well. =) being able to hand hold the lens is a plus point. Heavy lens are much tougher to handhold. =)

The price of DO lenses are between conventional ones and Ls. Heavier lenses? Such as 400mm f/2.8L and above.

i think you've got many misconceptions about the 70-300 IS. firstly, it is lighter than the DO version. secondly, it's IQ is known to be even better than its DO cousion and requires less PP out of the camera.

but the green ring always tempts me.

the green ring is seldom seen. Usually i see red ones during wedding or gold ones by avid photographers.

DO lenses usually are not that common cos pple would rather select an L which is not that much more expensive as compared to the same class. In addition, DO lenses are very limited.

agree, even i myself choose red ring. =)

I've tried a few canon lenses and i have to say. some are truly amazing. One of them is the 35 f/1.2L. Only one word: CRAZY. It's a crazy, crazy lens (and comes with a crazy crazy price as well). Since you mentioned the 24-70, it's also a mildly crazy one. Crazy, but not as crazy :P You should try them to understand them yourself. (:

Bro, the 35mm is f/1.4 L and not f/1.2L. The only f/1.2L lenses are the 50mm and 85mm.

equally terrible after sales in sgp. :bsmilie:
...

I beg to differ.

Sigma has a service center in SGP. Tamron has Tithes Marketing .

Green ring marked lenses are (supposedly) a symbol that the lens is an innovative breakthrough (ie usage of DO elements etc.).

For instance, Canon's first lens with Fluorite elements was an FD mount telephoto, and it was marked with a green ring round the front of the lens barrel.
