Hello

I intend to buy the following nikon lenses and speedlight for my d70 and would welcome any comments on whether it is wise:

1) AF-S 17-35mm f/2.8D IF-ED
2) AF-S 28-70mm f/2.8D IF-ED
3) AF-S VR 70-200mm f/2.8G IF ED
4) SB800 Speedlight

I know it may sound crazy but I do have a budget of about S$13k for this setup. i am also debating whether i should get the d2h with some of the above lenses OR a d70 but with ALL of the above lenses. or should i wait for the dx 17-55mm/2.8? the only problemm with the dx lens is that it is not compatible with the film-type nikon SLRs, hence i can't use if for my older camera. also, there's some overlap in focal length between 28-35mm for lenses (1) and (2) which could make one feel a little wasted, what do you think? fyi, i am not a pro, only a amature photographer.

Any comment is appreciated!

Thank you all for replying to my questions. Really appreciate it! I think I would need some time to take in and digest each and every one of your valuable inputs. I guess I would not rush into buying the equipment right away but would first do some hard thinking. Afterall, $13k is quite a lot of money.

Thanks again.

Coolingbean.. give me a call.. and I can arrange to meet up with you.. can let you try all the following lenses..

24-120 AFS-VR
70-200 AFS-VR
17-35 AFS
28-70 AFS
50 f1.8

I think you really need to consider what would your main subject of interest be.. if it more landscapes.. then the 12-24 and 17-35 are good options..

I do find the 10.5 a unique lens.. more a cliched lens.. not suitable for most situations.. so think carefully about it.. and test what you need..

dude..pray when was the last time i touched that amount of cash ^_^

i recommend this:
(1) a used F100
(2) a used D100 or D70 or D1x or D1H
(3) a used 50mmf1.8
(4) a used nikkor 20-35mm/2.8
(5) a used nikkor 80-200/2.8. either AFD version or AFS version will do. u dont need VR at this range
(6) a used nikkor 300mm/2.8
(7) a used 2x teleconverter.
(8) a used compatible nikon flash

coz of the 300mm..the budget may exceed just a bit..withis u hav a very gd setup of film, digital, lowlight, fastzoom, long tele. cool.

Gadrian, many thanks for your offer. From your postings in various threads, I could tell that you are an experienced photographer, and a generous one too. Let me sort out my own thoughts (and feelings) before taking up your offer. Hope there's no expiry date :)

Cheers.

No... I've not tested your 17-35, at least not yours, I tested Diin's one... :blah:

For your 28-70... have been begging you to bring, but you never brought it once... :(

And for your 70-200VR also... all along I tested AJ23's one... :blah:

Ok lah.. have to admit, I played with your beloved 24-120VR once... and as for your 50mm, I own one myself, so no point testing yours.

You just can't get enough of good things, I'm particularly addicted to the 17-35 and the 70-200VR for now ;p ;p

Why was I born fat instead of rich?

What do you think I used for my Geraldine shots? Give you a hint, it's not the 17-35  The 12-24 is not as good as the 17-35 :blah: :blah: :bsmilie:

Depends on how you use it... ;)

I'd go for:-

1. D2H $5400
2. 17-35AFS or (12-24AFS + 50mm/1.8) $2500?
3. 70-200VR $3100
4. SB-800 $680?

Somehow when I had the 28-70AFS, I hardly used it. The 50mm is also left unused. This setup leaves you some money for CF cards, Nikon Capture, etc.

Daniel

This is my preference for Nikon lenses, in order of usage level :-

1) 18-70
2) 70-200 VR
3) 12-24 Nikon or Sigma

Like Daniel, I use to own the AFS 28-70 but later sold it because it is not wide enough on a DSLR and it is heavy to carry around. Only consolation is that it has a f/2.8 aperture.

how come u say 24-120 is better on the digital bodies?

Drop the 28-70MM F2.8 and get the 24-120mm VR. ( A better choice if using D70,D100 or D2H)
