Lensbaby on Infrared ~ alternative on alternative. [limwhow]

厦门大学鲁迅像 The Statue of Lu-Xun in Xiamen University

Lu-xun 鲁迅 is a very reknown writer in the history of China.
His works were very reflective of the general sentiments of the people during the period when China was in great turmoil during the Qing Dynasty.
Often, his writing was critical in a subtle literary fashion, of the political decadence of Qing Empire.
A great Philosopher, Revolutionist and Author, his writings earned the praises of the late Mao Tse Tong.
Here, is the great man himself in 535nm.

Wow! I really like the miniture effect you achieved.

Would a normal DSLR achieve this too? w/o IR filter

What about the R72 ...?

Some of my friends asked me what happened to my first IR love ~ the R72?
Haha.. it's still here. Held close to my heart.
Once in a while I still shoot with it.. like today.
Here are a couple of shots while I was on the MRT travelling home.

... passed by the waters...

... passed by the roads...

... and finally, passed by the neighbourhood...

I feel that the R72, being of a higher cut-off, is much suited to IR photos with paucity of hues. And as I learn to shoot more IR pictures, I begin to appreciate this very characteristic of the 720nm filter, and thus I begin to tend not to push the colours too hard on this lovely piece of glass.
In short, I have learned to be more mellow whenever I am on the R72.

Hello Michael Ang,

Thanks for coming by my thread and giving me your endorsement.
Without an IR filter it is not possible to achieve this result. Some, have tried using Photoshop to reduce the saturation and increase the lightness of the respective Hues. But the effect is never the same and never near that attained with an IR filter.
Thus, certainly a normal un-modified DSLR can achieve this, but only with a screw-on IR filter.
Alternatively, a modified DSLR with a IR filter installed internally (and permanently) would do the same job.

Hello uncle limwhow, very nice and interesting thread... maybe will try after exams... Thanks for sharing..:)

Thank you so much, Manita for coming on board and appreciating my IR work!

535nm on Lensbaby f/5.6... in a small fishing village in Batam.

Recently got back from a small trip to Batam and had a chance to visit a couple of small rural fishing villages to shoot.
It was a totally different experience, a different part of Batam that is usually not frequented by visitors.
Here, is a totally busy photo, with too many distracting elements in it.
But as I stood at the wooden plan platform, I saw a villager walking across his plank on the other side so steadily.
I thought the Lensbaby with its selective focussing and some post processing vignetting could help bring him out a little.
Just thought I'd share it.

I have yet to learn how to shoot like these. :)

People who convert IR cameras don't usually reveal the actual filter cut-off they use.
They use a nickname to prevent other from copying.
From now on, I will call 535nm as LWH filter :)

Fatigue, my good friend, you are too kind!
It is not that you can't, it's whether you want to or not.
How can the Father of so many modified-IR-cameras in Singapore and beyond not easily throw on the table a few IR shots that will wow his audience?!
You are modest!

Ah... then I bid you, SkyStrike, a very warm welcome into the world of Infrared Photography, now made even more interesting with the Lensbaby.
Feel free to roam around and to explore the world of IR!

Thanks for the wark welcome, limwhow. IR Photography will become one of the area which I will explore eventually :) , but before I get more gears (Lensbaby, IR Modded Cams, IR Filters etc), I should learn to get my compositions/exposure right first (I still sucked in this ) *Still trying hard to resist the poison and preventing my bank statement from hitting reds :bsmilie:*

I've only been shooting for a very short period of time, but this brief period of time told/taught me that it's not easy to shoot pictures like those you and many others out there have shot. So I suppose lust for gears shouldn't be my priority for now till my basics improves :)

Wow this is good.. I too was interested in lensbaby, but still not sure much abt it.

I would certainly give you the encouragement to go on shooting and experimenting.
There is, in my opinion, no right or wrong. In IR photography, you and only you are the painter.
And you paint what you feel like seeing.

Thank you very much for your kind words, kirkteo.
Give it a try. You will never know what you will come up with.

Looking at Tanjong Uma from high up the hill...
My 'Secret Frequency' IR Camera on the Lensbaby

Still in Batam.
Still on the 535nm IR (Sorry fatigue, leaked out your secret frequency again...) with the Lensbaby.
We looked afar at that small little fishing village which they called Tanjong Uma, meaning kind of an 'in-between' village.
It was apparently so called between in those days, this little fishing village was a resting place for the fishermen, their sampans, and for them to trade.

sometimes, no need to perfect the skills of composition and exposure also can dive into IR.... I've been poisoned in IR since i joined CS couple years back and i still suck at composition & exposure. I don't think i can ever be cured from IR...

As long as you take the IR shot, as long as you're satisfied with the colors and the outcome, you're always correct.... Just get the modded camera & start shooting away! ;p

Well said, Blackgoddess!
Anyone who knows about Photography would take a look at my photos and laugh deep inside for the compositions and often, subject isolation, are terrible. But I agree with what you said... just shoot lor... and hopefully, in the process I can slowly improve.

Ya...i always think "i shoot, i edit, i happy, can already"..... or..happy can liao. :bsmilie:

Just when I am still busy exploring all your travelogue threads (incl those with SgTrekkers), and enjoying those moments that you captured + interesting captions... I realised that you have more 好料 over here! I am a 门外汉 for IR Photography, so I can't comment on the pics, but I must say that I enjoy this thread! Make me feel liked learning a little more about IR Photography.

Muzikbug, thank you very much for coming on board my thread! And thanks for your support of my other postings!
I am still learning about IR photography and in all sincerity, I find it a very very unique and interesting genre.
Thanks again!
