Lens: Canon 17-40L/f4 or Sigma 17-35mm/f2.8-4 or Tamron 17-35mm/f2.8-4?

the tamron's quite sharp.
i've both the 17-35 and 28-75. 28-75 is much sharper. So sharp that all the flaw's on a model's face is exposed even with makeup. Usually have to apply a softening filter to even out the texture.

L's are good, but they are expesensive. Are they really worth the price? If u are earning $600 a piece of picture, then buy an L for the marginal improvement in quality. If u are earning $600 a wedding, a tamron will do the job. For studio, get primes.

Oops... I'm currently getting less than $600 a wedding...perhaps I should quit this expensive hobby... haha :sweatsm:

anyone know where to buy the lowest price of Tamron SP 17-35mm/f2.8-4 ?? The current MS color equote is SGD845. This lens produces sharp copy and comparable to canon 17-40L. Also found many good review about it.

TCW has tons of it. At $595, they are still making profits. This shows that the value of this lens is super low.

Maybe this only shows how much $$$$$$$$ canon has been earning off us.. :thumbsd:

tons of it?!!! are they selling new set or refurnished one?

i believe the term is called 'grey set'. its likely to be wat electronic stores call 'export' sets - ie warranty is covered by the store (in this case, TCW) and not by the authorised local agent. oh yeah. its 'cheap' not necessarily becos of the margins but likely to be due to the 'price' of paying for a local authorised warranty. tamron singapore, IIRC, offers 3yrs (?) warranty on lenses purchased from authorised agents while TCW normally offer 1yr shop warranty.

spartacus.ret - u seemed to have an axe to grind with canon over the L-lens? perhaps, its really unfair to compare L-lens with a 3rd-party lens. heck, its also quite unfair/meaningless to compare originals with 3rd party simply becos the tech dat goes behind in the making of these lenses are not the same. L-lenses are not called Luxury lenses for no good reason as they represent the epitome of canon lens technology. hence, its only reasonable to be expected to pay a premimum for such a lens, isn't it? if u cannot afford, and/or not willing to pay for the best dat canon has to offer, perhaps u shld consider buying 3rd parties. :)

No wonder it's selling at $595, so I see. TCW imported them from Japan?

Japan is well known for selling lower prices compared to other Asia countries.

This further shows that Japan is a place to buy camera stuff, be it original or 3rd party. ;p

take a couple of shots of the same subject checked for backfocusing etc etc then compared sharpenss at f4 f5.6 and f8

actually it's not noticable la... just being kiasu the only thing was the first 2 copies had been frequently used for testing byu outer customers

hmm...i think it's hard to test at f5.6 onwards for indoor. A slight handshake may result blur image.

The 17-40 is around 1.2k+ brand new. The Tamron is around 800++ brand new. Compare grey with grey, brand new with brand new. $300+ price difference is not a world of difference. Agree with what had been said about resale as well. A 10 year old 80-200 L can still fetch for above a thousand. People are still willing to buy the ancient 20-35L and 28-80L. For the fun of it, try to find a 10 year old Tamron that has lasted 10 years and still can be sold off before shooting off the Ls.

Having said that, resale value is not everything. Optical quality of both lens is very similar, which makes the Canon seem expensive. But personally, I feel the $300 + difference is way more than justified by a much faster and precise AF system, much better build, weather seal (correct me if I'm wrong) and extremely consistent and dependable results. If you have no need for that, and only require it for easy casual scenic shots, Tamron works just fine.
