... Yes, you have to stop down the lens manually. Switch the lens to manual mode if there is such a switch on the lens and try turning the aperture ring... the diaphragm blades should stop down to the aperture indicated on the ring. Good for you if this works... otherwise read the next paragraph for some DIY tips.

If there is no such manual/auto switch on the lens and the diaphragm blades do not stop down when turning the aperture ring, then some simple modification is needed: you have to push the 'stop-down pin' (the one jutting out at the M42 screw end) down and keep it down with a dab of superglue (just a bit will do and press it down for a minute... do not use too much glue or it will flow into the optical elements). If you can think of other ways to keep the pin down, of course it will be better than the permanent superglue solution...

Hi airconvent,
Further to my earlier suggestion on DIY modification for M42 lens, here is a link to read about adaptor modification... I think this is a better solution because the 'stop-down pin' need not be glued permanently once the adaptor is modified... but it requires some metal-machining skills... ;)

Please also note the warning about Takumar lenses due to the different way their stop-down pins operate! I am aware that earlier batches of Super Takumar lenses have 'reversed' stop down pins and earlier batches of Auto Takumar lenses have longer protruding back end elements and similar pin operations (thus jamming SLR mirrors at bigger aperture settings). For more about these peculiarities, read this link...

For these 'reversed' stop-down pin lenses, there is no way to perform DIY modification other than cutting off the pin and be forced to use the lenses permanently fixed at fully-opened aperture :(

Nice shots, Alvin. Looks you already enjoy using the best 50mm lens ;)

Hi all,
I managed to get the camera to take pictures using the Samyang lens.
Strangely, the metal ring is flushed to the body contacts which means it is shorting all the pins but strangely, it still works.
I can't seem to be able to set the aperture at all but the image I took was good.

HAve to be more wary of the flare when using those old lenses , especially the russian ones where there is no lens coating ,,,,,,,,, :)

Here are some shots using the CZ 58mm f2
