Leica M9 + Non-Leica lens => "Cheap Out"??

The Summarit range is not too expensive (relatively). If you can bear with the slower f/2.5 aperture, this could be a good starting point.

I Love Leica

But part of the fun is also to play with vintage lenses and some of the very fun ones are Non Leica.

At the end of the day the setup that works for you is THE ONE.. and for many it will not be a RF setup

KRW's reviews is good for light reading and general guide. You will need to do more homework if you want to pursue the subject more.. but I suppose you know that already ;)

I won't worry about this too much .. let's just enjoy the hobby and capture the MOMENTS !

Cheers

What an interesting topic...so many reactions...who care what other said...it is you to decide...just enjoy the photography process...go out and shoot what you already have and whether Leica or non-Leica, it doesn't matter....:D

In the process, read the following written by Ken Rockwell http://www.kenrockwell.com/leica/cosina.htm:

"... I don't understand why anyone would cheap-out with Voigtländer lenses on an M9. Lenses are free compared to an M9, and cheap lenses compromise the M9's quality.....
.....Ask yourself: if you have the money to throw away at an M8.2 or any other Leica, new or used, then why can't you afford a lot less money to invest in the lenses it deserves, which don't depreciate like the M8?...."

His statement really put me off , I find it a little offensive. I wonder what is the "prevailing view" of our Local Leica M9 users? Do you agree?

Pls share your view if you're willing. Thanks a lot!!
Thanks so much!

Trust me... you will be a much happier person if you stop spending time reading his opinion and just go out and make some pictures. Even using iPhone could give you immeasurable pleasure... :)

Buy half of what your wallet can afford and spend the rest on a business class ticket to any destination of your choice.

I love Leica too... But I don't think they make good digital cameras. Anyone can certainly disagree.

If Nikon or Canon sold you a 11K camera that has awful AWB, slow file writing speeds, a minuscule in camera memory buffer,1/4000th shutter speed and a tiny low res LCD screen - everyone will demand a refund. Not the M9. Why? Because it's a Leica lor. We make too much excuses for them sometimes. This from a Leica M9/M8 owner - me. :)

And as for Voigtlander and legacy lenses, they allow creative shooters interesting options. Very few wide angle lens out there can swallow the entire Piccadilly Circus or The Ion like a 12mm Heliar - and still fit into the smallest pouches. My Canon 50mm F1.2 vignettes on M9, but I love it to death for it's Bokeh quality - they don't make them like this anymore...

Happy shooting!

Thanks. Since my new baby girl is born, the half of my $$ goes to her milk power, instead of Biz class ticket and/or my NEW camera....

Still have not been able to finalised my purchase of the lens from you (initially planned for 9 months ago!) cos was busy handling this "new Born" life situation. :embrass: Now feeling less stressed out/freer, i'm planning to invest my bonus/saving on M9, whatever that's left will be spend on your lenses....:devil: (just don't tell my wife....)

I have 2 long Leica M6 user friend just bought a Nikon D700 and a Canon 5DMkII after testing it along with M9, they are very rich so price different is not an issue. The reason they change is simple, they realized they can get good images in 1/4 of the time they need with DSLR compare with M9. I was speechless.

D700 is indeed very capable. Ticks all the right boxes for me too. And such a long prefect life is testament to what a great design it is. When I need the job to be done efficiently, d700 is the ticket.

The leica m9 let's me get special creative shots that I can't achieve with the nikon. The long list of legacy lens ensures it will Always give you a retro look, glow, bokeh that Nikon SLR will find hard to create. Maybe Canon 5D had a closer chance of achieving that old school look with the huge lens compatibility with R, OM, Pentax etc....

Nothing like a canon 50mm 0.95 on a M9.....

i have thought of that... but i am a trigger happy person (spoilt by DSLR)... so i think i will burn lotsa films... how much does a roll of film cost this days (sorry if i sound stupid here)?

when u hold a M film body without motodrive, your rate of shooting slows down automatically:bsmilie:

Camera and new born baby go very well with wife's approval. Trust me!!! Go out there and get your set and capture those precious moments of your baby. They grow up so fast!!! Look at my flickr and show it to your wife and she will understand.

I think Leica digital is 5 years behind top of the line Nikon & Canon technology ;p

But no choice, everyone wants it coz its a digital RF.

Yes. But it's still a good camera. Well, it's still the only digital full frame RF. I had look at others like epson R1Ds & M8/8.2, they're really not much cheaper.

Ya I agree but their objectives are different. They can certainly get good images with a DSLR but to make a good photograph they may need more than that.

wise words... ...and it amazes me how you managed to convince your CO wrt to your numerous leica bodies! :)

Hi,

thanks for all the views. To view discussion across the causeway pls go to http://bit.ly/cwWa4p @Photomalaysia. Which got just a little heated up......

Ken R can take his comments u know where..... to put it

I fully understand your predicament........ at the moment there is NO OTHER full frame sensor digital rangefinder on the market..... so there is NO choice issue..... the M9 is the ONLY game in town for digital rangefinders..... period. No where else to go (for now) if you want a full frame sensor rangefinder

So go ahead and use what ever other compatible lens you want

NOW IF ..... Voigtlander, Cosina, Konica or Epson or other FULL SENSOR options are available and you want to snob yourself with an M9 ...... and get stingy on lenses .... then we can start a discussion about illogical choices and combinations

At the moment ..... its NO CHOICE

And darned it....... ITS YOUR MONEY....... you allocate how you spend it YOUR WAY.

Just buy what you're happy with, that's more than enough.

Yes, agreed. there is really no choice. the problem of cos it's my money (or in this case, it's my "no money"...heh heh ;p

true. the predicament is what i am happy with, may not be what i can afford. (well, at least in the digital RF game).

Really appreciate all your input and views. it was an eye opener.:thumbsup:
