I dunno if this makes sense or not, but why not consider frosted glass?

yeah a ground glass is basically a piece of frosted glass. later i will check with the glass shop do they have frosted glass. Else they will have to sandblast it.

Here how my DIY GG looks on my cam. It is not great yet but usable considering i only spent 15 mins grinding it. The centre seems to be very bright which i never see with my original GG. I need to grind it further with a finer sandpaper.

can you tell if it is brighter ? or darker then your previous GG? I guess, many of us are having problems focusing during sunrise or sunset. The intensity of light at the GG is really poor. If having a brighter GG helps, then I don't mind investing on a DIY GG like you

i think it is brighter now not because i did a good job but because the grinding is still quite coarse thus more light will come through. The centre is very bright (hot spot). I have to grid it now further and then report the result again.

cool.. It will be good if you can take a shot of the standard purchased GG with the one you DIY side by side...

Excellent piece of work. Zguy has politely turned down my offer for a Toyo Fresnel and ventured into this new avenue.

Other threads talk about using using Aluminium oxide or silicon carbide powder. The hardware store ppl went "huh" when I asked them. Not sure what the local/chinese term to use. anyway sandpaper are coated with silicon carbide so it will work also.

most hardware stores will not know such things , because this is an industrial material.

If you happened to visit a tooling house , then they will know precisely the powder you are looking for. These powder are used to polish the mold, so that the surface can be "mirror finished". Try to look for those shops that sells precision drill bits, precision CNC tools etc...

not very sure about this... but, I think fresnel refers to the ability to see an even intensity image at the ground glass especially at the edges. ( prevent light fall off at the edges of the GG ).

did not expect much since it was raining last night and there were not many stars around....
but.. what a surprise reward.

The Fresnel was originally developed for light house. It helps to focus all the light from a panel to the eye.
So it makes the whole panel appears evenly to the eye, and the whole screen look brighter.

The screen consist of two parts, the glass with matt, and the fresnel part is facing you.

This is the little canel between the 2 small island of Pulau Punggol Barat and Pulau Punggol Timor.
This place normally doesn't look this nice. Was lucky that the clouds were nice and the tide was high and still.

I have took slides ( 6x12 ) from this location also, I could see some mist from the tree too. Hopefully they turn out well.

Just realise how far this place is from where I stay...To get a early morning/sunrise shoot there I think I have to camp there the night before :dunno:
