It fails the squeeze test. It flexes quite a bit.

Wow! You must have a grip like the man of steel! I shudders to think of the day I shake hands with you! :bsmilie:

On the contrary, I didn't need to apply much pressure to the top plate of the L1 to get it to flex.

You must be very strong as I couldn't flex the top plate of my L1 at all.

Either that or the ones in Japan aren't as strong as the one's they export. :dunno:
I used my thumb btw.

Wow... Wouldn't want to thumb wrestle with you then.... you might snap off my thumb
Are you sure it's not a dummy plastic model of the L1 that you flexed in Japan ... like those dummy handphones in our local handphone shops? ;)

Yeah you are probably right - a dummy plastic model that worked like the real deal (working LCD and controls). Or was it...? Oh wait -I must've mixed up a Panasonic phone with an in-built camera with the L1 - That was it... Those darn things all look so alike don't they - cheap and nasty. tsk tsk.

Hey, like it or not that was my experience with the L1. You don't have to be concerned just bec you bought the camera - don't let my assessment of it make you regret your decision - you seem miffed that I am dissing the thing. Just airing my views. I'm sure users will make up their own minds when it comes to the crunch. :)

BTW, I am not anti-Panasonic if that is what you are thinking. ;)

Don't worry. I am old enough to know what I want and make my own decisions. I only believe my own assessments of what's good and bad in a camera. It is all relative to each individual's shooting style anyway. I'm impartial about any camera I own, after all they are just tools. I 've been very clear about what I liked and disliked about the L1 and I have posted as much in my assessment of it in this forum. So far, I definitely have no regrets as its good points more than outweigh its bad.

Good for you then! ;)

But I still think the build quality sucks for a $2-3K camera. Panasonic could have done better. But come to think of it, it's a dSLR so I guess it really doesn't matter does it, it'll have little residual value in a few years like all other digital cameras.

yes but at what price?
Can you get the same quality from a cheaper product?

We all know that most of $3,200 is from the lens, not the body.

The L-1 is obviously on a limited production run, Panny is banking on the Leica name to move them. This is the first DSLR from Panny. Did they make a mistake making it a mid-range one? Maybe. Should they have released a entry-level one instead? Probably.

Then again, I think Panny had their hands tied by none less than Leica. I suspect the red dot version would be stiffened up a bit by some aluminium/magnesium, so it feels better. At the same time, giving Leica to smack down another $500 - $1,000 on the retail price.

Come December, the lens alone would go on retail... I shudder to think at the cost, after all it does say L-E-I-C-A. :bsmilie:

Yes I have actually (if you had read my post carefully I mentioned that I tried it side by side with the Epson RD1)and I will still hold to my opinion that the build quality of the L1 is not commensurate with it's price tag. I am not talking about optical quality but build quality. The L1 is light is weight and with the lens mounted feels unbalanced IMO.

Isn't image quality a higher priority when deciding on a camera. I have an L-1 and the LC-1 before it. There is definitely some improvement there. I also have a Canon 1D mkll and really cannot complain about the L-1's build quality except for the cheap and plasticky lens hood. I've also used oly's E-20 which is practically the same build as the E-1. Again, how is the L-1 so bad compared to it?

I tried the Epson RD1 too and it feels well built yes but it doesn't seem to give you a feeling that it is worth that much.

For all the guys who place feel and build quality above all else, I highly recommend the M8. :)

Seems like you pay for the extended 3-year warranty and no questions ask 6-months' insurance.

Well, the no-questions-asked 6 months' insurance is real nice I must admit.

Not to mention bragging rights for the little red dot! :bsmilie:

I probably belong to the have-but-not-much category, so must-not-be-tempted-by-little-red-dot... ;p

I met one of the members here yesterday and we share the Leica heritage, he using the M while I using the R. He showed me the L1 and I must say that it felt light, and the lens while big, did not feel heavy or well built, but certainly felt better than the 14-54mm.

is the L1 lens exactly same as the one in Digilux3?

Aaaagghhhh...tempted...blu's tempted but the red dot!!!!

The lens though designed and made to Leica's standards does not come with the red dot and so should not cost as much as a made-by-Leica lens. Otherwise, it would mean the L1 camera body might cost less than $1k. :)

Anyone selling the L1's kit lens?? hehehehe Uncle tomcat...wanna let go of that for a full Leica?

BTW, must butter butter a bit...call Uncle mah...hehehehe.

How can? Then my L1 would be incomplete !
Besides, I don't think there's such a thing as a full Leica 14-50mm lens for the Four-Thirds System.

Its going for about S$1.8K in Japan's second hand resale market...:)

 So fast got 2nd hand. What's the current S$ for a new L1? A 14-54mm cost about S$750~780 (new), So that may be worth it...anyone going Japan? Then blu sell the L1 body for S$800...keep the lens :D
