that simply a back thrust, not a "spiral kick. and actually it isn't really "lethal", to quote you. it's very easy to dodge or block a back thrust, simply because it takes almost three quarters of a second for the opponent to turn and then thrust out. and it's easy to miss, especially after fighting for 5 minutes.. its VERY tiring to spar, kumite (sparring) in karate (i dunno about other martial arts) are limited to one minute bouts.
For a TKD fighter, to block a backthrust and react with a countermove can be easily done.

However, on the streets itself, to the uninitiated or novice in martial arts, backthrust CAN be a deadly move.

I'm not talking about half-assed backthrusts, I'm talking about those where u really swing and extend ur leg fully with power. A single blow will deliver enough force to induce possible cardiac arrest. There was a case many years ago where a simple street fight as a result of a minor scuffle resulted in a fatality cos that fella used a backthrust and induced cardiac arrest in the victim.

What happened after that is hazy in my memory. But this article appeared in The New Paper many years ago.

Treat all martial arts as a healthy sports and self defense.

There is no best martial arts other than using your pair of legs to RUN for your life:thumbsup:....a wise advise I used to give my students. :)

amen!

:bsmilie: but you'll be hard-pressed to find anyone these days who's willing to run away, especially among youngsters... they are all on about face, pride, ego, that kind of assorted foolishness.

must add another 2 wise old sayings:
Bruce Lee: " practise the art of fighting without fighting"

Sun Tze: "all warfare are based on deceptions. Hence, when able to attack, we must seem unable. when using our forces, we must seem inactive. when we are near, we must make the enemy believe we are far. when far, we must make the enemy believe that we are near".

There's a saying in Chinese "杀一惊百" or "Kill one to warn a hundred"

Ego? Face? Pride? See the one with the loudest mouth in the group, take him down quickly in a subduing move and snap his arm like a twig (young people, bones heal fast, no worries). Stand up and say coldly, "Come, who's next?" ;p

Sure all run. :bsmilie:

wing chun has always been a somewhat obscure art.

if u lookin at exercise, not much cardio also. mostly arms, minimal body movement and footwork. its idea is short and sharp. get in, finish it fast.

learnt it in mid 90s at kallang.

west side, i dunno. seems that toa payoh, lavender ve ppl teaching.

Not sure what you mean by obscure art. Maybe you are refering to the fact that wing chun at the earlier stage was only taught to few people so kinda mysterious.

While wing chun stresses on efficient use of energy and attacks, it does not mean it does not lead to 'much cardio'. Try sparring and I bet for most people who are not in martial arts will run out of breath after a couple of minutes.

I always doubt if it is really possible to jump and kick when you are attacked by someone.
Think wing chun's way of fast attack is good for most people does does not spend hours in a gym to build an iron man stamina (ok this does not apply wing chun only but for sure, after you've given the shock to your attacker, do you plan to fight till he/she declares defeat or just leave the scene asap?). Ya its true, wing chun was designed by a female monk escaped from Shaolin when SL was under attack by the army.

Think it was nightwolf who said got knee injury so cannot do TKD and want to try wing chun. All martial arts need the stance to be solid so is wing chun. I do hear one case our senior was in wheelchair (temporarily) and still can beat up the juniors. Possible but I supposet the gap in their skills is big anyway.

Still keen to know where can learn Wing Chun in SGP.

ps the 90's pop group is Wang Chung I think not Wing Chung/Wing Chun
