3. Sainte-Mère-Église
The US airborne military action at Sainte-Mère-Église and La Fière inspired Steven Spielberg
to create the last battle scene of the movie “Saving Private Ryan”.
The scene where the Germans Panzer group storm the town to recapture the bridge and
were stubbornly defended by Captain Miller (Casted by Tom Hank) and his depleted platoon strength.

The fighting at Sainte-Mère-Église in the movie “The Longest Day”
was base on almost the same historical fighting by US 82nd Airborne Division.
On the dawn of 06th Jun 1944, US 82nd & 101st Airborne forces were parachute and scattered everywhere in the western part of Normandy,
due to navigation error and heavy German anti-aircraft fire.
Despite the mis-drop and heavy losses, airborne troopers try their best to regroup to proceed to their objective,
or secure any nearby town/bridges if they were dropped behind too far from their objective.
Sainte-Mère-Église was an crucial objective to be secure.
It is an important town which linkway for Carentan and Cherbourg,
and a strategic point for Germans to launch counter attack against Utah Beachhead.
Small assemble units of scattered US 82nd and 101st Airborne Division manage to capture Sainte-Mère-Église and La Fière on D-Day.
The German command immediate recognized the strategies importance,
and for the next few days, the Germans counter attacked to recapture it.
But the airborne units defend fiercely and hold firm until relief by US Armour from Utah Beach on 09th Jun.
