I wonder how is a "standard" defined in art such as photography? I can imagine we have subjects who are sharp enough, properly exposed etc.. But what's next?

Let me share a story, i'll try to make it short (i'll try)
I have an fb friend, who's still a student. he messaged me and told me someone is willing to pay him to shoot an event. the organizer paying him $30/hr and he asked me if its ok. i said ok since you're still just a student anyway, he asked me if he should ask for $50/hr, i told him if you have a portfolio to show them go ahead and bargain, he said he doesn't have a portfolio, so i told him you should be grateful already that someone is willing to pay you even though you dont have a portfolio.
so he's asking me what he needs, i told him you at least need a flash if its an event, he said he doesn't have a flash, told him that if you are going to be shooting more events its a good investment to get 1. so he bought one but he doesn't even know how to use it.
i'll cut the story short, he only bought the batteries on the day itself. during the event, maybe he's ganjiong, he dropped his lens too!
imagine if this was a wedding... you have a guy who doesn't know how to use his equipment and unsure of himself. good luck with your wedding i would say

a client called me wanted to do just a bday party shoot, but on the day of the event i'm not available, rather than lose this client i sub out to another photographer, she says she's a wedding photographer.
i saw her works before hand i'd say its just ho-hum. i couldnt find another person, and since its just a bday party and she claims she's a wedding photographer, so i thought how bad could it be.
the photos came our really terrible! poor lighting, poor composition, a lot of the pics are not straight, and not its not artistic tilting, its just poor composition
lucky the client didnt complain, but for me i just couldn't take the photos so i had to tell her what i thought of her photos in the nicest way i can
well the client did pay good money in fairness to them, i didn't charge like $30/hr or something like that, i'm lucky they didn't complain

Never sub out work. It can kill your reputation.

pros and cons i guess
When you sent someone to shoot for you.
if your client think the photographer you sent did a good job, he/she takes the credit and the future business.
if your client think the photographer you sent screwed up the assignment, you take the credit and there goes your future business.

My deg studies research shows that 88% of the 105 married couples I interviewed said wedding expenditures contributed to the fact of the choice of their AD photographers - from low budget pg, friend friend or professionals. Also of these 87%, almost 1 in 2 would choose low budget pg or friends as their choice of wedding photographers due to the fact that they need a pg to photograph their life moment. However, these couples regretted their choice when they receive their deliverables and photos. The regretted choice is no money could be replaced. Bad photos, scarred memories and bad sales and service experiences were common in these cases.
Those half that chose the cheaper alternatives would rather take a risk to save money to hope for a better quality photos admitted they were naive to think that way. Only a small percentage of the half would find it acceptable because they had took the risk and paid off.
To cherish every moment and captivate the memories, the remaining 12% chose a professional pg on their AD. Only a handful of these 12% experienced bad services from these professionals. Service experience in terms of photo qualities and deliverables as well as communication problems were the causes for unhappiness of those who chose pros.
The point to wedding couples is that it is not only the services you are paying for pro, you are also paying for the service experience as well as the pros' knowledge and industry experience in this field.
Hence, if you are looking for this kind of pg paying this kind of money, expect the kind of outcome as described.

i've always said i dont mind fighting for a project based on style and quality. i've had a couple, groom say he likes my work, but the bride said she doesn't (btw it's always the bride that wins) so i said fair enough, they didn't bargain with price but style, so i'm ok with that
