Pentax local support so bad one ar? :(

Care to give me some basic answers about Pentax thingy below:

1. How long is the warranty for a DSLR? Izit 1 year like Nikon and Canon? I read somewhere in dpreview, itz 3 years.
2. If got problem, where's the service centre?
3. 3rd party lenses should be able to fit in right?
4. Their flashes got all those 'commander' mode thing or not?
5. I read somewhere that you can't buy body only for the dslr, must buy the whole kit. Izit true?

Thanks!

1. K100D has a one year. K10D unknown.
2. shihiro. something like that. look on the web for address
3. generally, yes. there are some third party lenses not available in pentax mount (e.g. sigma
120-300 f2.8)
4. erh. what feature do you want exactly?
5. for k100d, probably true. but the kit is good.

here's a first impression:

here's a site specially for pentax K10D:
http://pentax-k10d.jp/

there's also this japanese mag call "kamera man" that features a write up on this new K10D with samples pics comparing with Nikon D80 & D200, Canoon 400D & 5D, Sony Alpha. all these DSLRs were used to check for differences between films, namely Fuji provia 100F, Velvia 100 & Kodak Ektachrome E100VS.

besides film battles, there's also a test on which stabilising tech is more effective. last but not least, dust buster efficiency.

pretty cool read if u understand jap. :) me only half past 6. :embrass:

some hands-on preview with small thumbnail pics:

hope i didn't infect anyone here with the "Buy-rus". :bsmilie:

more concern about the noise level. Hopefully it will be better than A100.

I'll get the K10D even the review isn't good :) And I don't expect a full review of the K10d very soon even after it's released. DPR is quite slow w/ Pentax stuff. There is no review for K100d yet at DPR even after it's been released almost 4-5 months back ...

And I'll get the Nikon D80 too, if I didn't choose Pentax in the first place ;) It's really a great camera.

Wow, then you will have 3 Pentax DSLR liao.

No lah. I had a D before, but changed it to a Ds which is the only one I have. Thought of selling the Ds after I get the K10d, but my wife wants to keep it for her own use. I can't get much selling it anyway, and there is no way I could get a better camera at the price I might get by selling it :) Hopefully I could get a DA40 for her so she'd have the most compact dSLR combo ;)

The K10D is officially on sale as some people on Dpreview as got the. Stay tuned to the Pentax forum as the K10D debate will arise.

Does Pentax have "1st Batch" issues with their new products, generally? If have, think wait longer better hor?

How is the handling of this K10D? I've held a D50 before and i love it. It's very secure and comfortable than my current Canon G5.

If all goes well, I was thinking to get the body alone & pair it up with the Sigma 17-70mm F2.8-4.5 DC Macro [MSC $600, AP $620, TK $585 (incl GST)] as my 1st starter walkabout kit. I read favourable reviews about this lens & the focal range is more than the K10D kit lens. What you guys think?

Hi Look4Raymond
Going a little off topic here. How does the 17-70mm compare with the pentax 18-55 kit lens in terms of quality? the kit lens cost only less than $200 in the wild but the f2.8 of the sigma intrigues me.
That would make it slightly better for portrait shots?
Also, where is TK?
Thanks

Thanks, fren!
Looks like this tkfoto has a very narrow range of stuff (unless their website is not doing the any justice). the sigma 17-70mm does sound very good. at least it had a much better review than my 18-200! that's understandable of course since the 17070 is x4 while mine is x11.
I do intend to keep the 18-200 because it so versatile and it's just a hare's whisker longer than the K100D kit lens!

I am thinking of buying either D40 or K100D.

Best price Nikon D40 = $950
Best price Pentax K100d = $1120

which one is the better value?

cheers.

Hi, which shop sells the Nikon D40 for $950?

what do you plan on using your camera for?

Hi, I was also condisering btw these 2 DSLR. well plan to use the camera to take pics of my baby boy, he is 3 mths old. mainly indoor for the moment, w/o flash. Intent to get a kit and a 50mm 1.8f lens for now. Maybe get a flash later on. both are within budget only issue is which to get
thanks in adavnce :D

Then get the K00D lah. A nice camera, and you'll need the SR feature when shooting indoor ...

I think the K100D is more advanced than the D40. :)

Hm.

1. You realise that that with the D40 the 50 1.8 is going to be manual focus right? Please check this, but I don't think nikon sells a HSM 50 1.8. The D40 is castrated - it can't provide autofocus to lenses which don't have an in-body motor. So if you end up getting that, you've gotta be -really- sure that the lenses you want are available.

2. In relation to flash, while nikon has a better flash system, the D40 doesn't include any of those advantages. So it's a wash.

3. the problem with pentax is that you're not going to be able to get a 50 1.8, you'll need to get a 50 1.4, and i suspect you might actually need to have a friend in the US to get one quickly.

I think the main differences between the two are that the K100D has SR and is larger. The K100D might also have a slightly better viewfinder, and both control systems aren't terribly fantastic. I can't really decide for you if the price difference is worthwhile - why don't you compare the total package price? I'm not sure how much the nikon flash costs - for pentax gear the easiest place (and sometimes only place) to get a quote from is cathy photo.

Something else to note is that if you're prepared to get an external flash and have it mounted, you probably don't need a 50 1.4 unless you want shallow DOF - the flash (please use a diffuser) will provide sufficient light to give you a good shutter speed indoors. If, however, you want to shoot without flash, in a place where the light levels are low, the SR will be a serious advantage.

eh, i misread you.

without flash? Then the K100D has a serious advantage, because cheap fast lenses for the D40 (which have autofocus) will probably be quite rare. (they're not that common for pentax either, but at least they're -available-.)

what do you plan on using your camera for?

I plan to use the camera to take my family, vacation and possibly creative shots for competition.....

Putting aside the price, which is a better camera? And why?

cheers.
