Well, this 'uncle' happens to be my good friend. We went there together and he walked out w/ a K10d as well
SR does work well, but it's not that useful when shooting moving targets. Better have than not I guess
I don't know what you mean about the 'clunky' movement/sound. It's after mid night now, pretty quite in our place. And I set the SR on, shake the camera up and down, left and right, can't hear anysound inside the camera. Maybe I got two bad ears

The Pentax kit lens should be better than the Canon one, but don't expect dramatic improvement over the Canon one. It's a good lens, excellent for its cost. I've seen many good photos taken by the kit lens, and I know alot guys like the kit lens. But I myself never really used it for any shootout except a couple of tests...

If the Pentax is in your words "really cheap", perhaps it's because you're comparing it to the over the top pricing that Nikon consistently sets for their cameras... more money for less features? Anyway Pentax has in the past offered good performance and value and I think the K10D is no different. It is gonna be a big winner from now onwards, features wise and price wise.

Just got mine this afternoon at AP for $1320 nett (body only w/ 1gb SD and a sling camera bag)
We (I went there w/ another friend) didn't bargain 'cause we felt the price was quite okay. Had been waiting for it for too long, so didn't even think much before we made the payment
Now I'm a happy Pentaxian ...

BTW, what's the brand and speed of the SD card they gave?

From what I've read:
- When panning, recommended that SR be turned off. Camera can't tell the difference between deliberate action (panning) and unintentional action (hand shaking), so will try to compensate for all movements.
- The 'clunky' sound comes when you shake the camera about when it is OFF. This is the floating SR mechanism.

Understandly, as a first timer, you are worried about every little "problem" any user bring up but I very much doubt clunky is an issue you should be focussing on. I've been where you are before. Instead of worrying about all these little issues (all cameras including C, N and O have them), hold it in your hand..does it feel comfortable and good?
Then check out the sample images. Do you like them? The image from feng wei on the man is really detailed and clear. (of course the nice lens helps too!) .
Otherwise, you will always be holding back because you are waiting for more good comments or waiting for a better model to come....just my 2 cents worth, fren.
I myself is dillying and dallying because I already have a K100D, so the improvement is not that great for me. Had I still own the istDL, I would have gone straight for the K10D at this price (I paid $1269 for my K100D!).

Do let us know what else gems you discover for this camera as you test it more..
As a test on your friend, I think you should have taken 2 shots. One with the kit lens and the other with your DA40..that way, we can establish how much of the perfomance is the lens and camera...

super great price huh. $1320. For the first time, Singapore is not screwed by the local distributors unlike other camera brands.
Really tempted to buy one set just to support Shiro for their great pricing.
Wonder if someone should start a pricelist for Pentax lens it is really useful to potential buyers like me.

no 50 1.8, unfortunately, but the 50 1.4 is pretty affordable (but not easily available in singapore.)

I popped by Cathay Photo at Peninsular Plaza, and it so happened that the K10D just came in.
I was looking forward to testing it, but they were charging the battery :bsmilie:
Anyway, the camera feels well constructed and gosh, were the buttons big and well spaced apart! (the ones on the back, left column) Each switch has a durable feeling to it when turned or pressed. One thing I'm not used to is that the shutter button doesn't feel like there is a half-press. Is this a characteristic of Pentax?
Forgive me, but I'm a first time DSLR buyer here (using Canon S80 currently, and understands how to use manual settings). May I ask, how viable is the pancake lens (DA40) as a walkabout lens? (How is your experience with it, anyone?). Another thing, in what situations does an external flash be required? What is the difference in usability of the Pentax 360 and 540 flash?
Last but not least, Cathay's price is $1580(nett) with kit lens.
