Just to share-My own Sigma 12-24

Just something a little different to share when shooting ultra-wide ...

anyone with experience using rear gel filter on this lense?

I will be slicing up my rear gelatine for sale next week. I only need a small piece out from the 75x75mm, so all the bros here with this lens can try out. I have the Kodah Wratten equivalent to ND2 and ND6, I think.

Think u exposed a bit too long already. The highlights are quite overblown.

It is not the best timing to shoot, the DR range is too extreme. underexpose for highlights and u will not get much lighting in the rest of the buildings liao. probably shoot when the skies have abit more light left.

I am trying to get silky water without the ripples of waves. I have tried using f8 and f11 at 5s, 10s, 20s and find this to be the best of the lot. It is quite difficult to balance the exposure. The IR construction has very bright spot lights shining outwards whereas the CBD's light generally light up the sky on the right side. It may be better to take this same scene at the later part of evening when the sky is still blue.

You should be taking the photo at an earlier timing rather than later. The later the day gets, the more contrasty the building lights will get compared to the surrounding environment and exposure will be harder to control.

Sorry, post a photo not taken using 12-24 to illustrate what I am trying to achieve. Dark background, silky water surface, water reflection. I think this is also a 10s or 20s f8 shot.

edit: I changed the comparison to the below as it looks more like the IR scene.

The lighting conditions between the second example and the IR shot is vastly different. Given that, its not realistic to expect similar results. You can hold back the clipped highlights with some shadow/highlight adjustment but there is a limit to that too.

I have changed the photo to one that mimics that of the IR scene. If you look at this photo, there are construction spotlights on crane on the left side as well. However, this lens handle flare and bright lights better than the 12-24. Can I also make the assumption that the 12-24 does have a weakness in flare suppression.

The conditions are still different. The brighter light sources in the IR photo are much closer to you. That said, there isn't any significant flare problem in that photo, just spots of overexposure here and there so its not really a good indication of how well the lens can handle flare. However if you were to point a UWA in the direction of a very strong light source, flare is inevitable no matter how well designed the lens is.

This lens is interesting ;)

Btw, i heard that mounting filters on the lens ie ND/CPL is impossible since there is no front screw thread, but will be made possible when put on the Lens Cap holder (82mm), any issues with vignetting?

vignetting will happpen badly at the 12mm end with the lens cap holder

I know this is digging up an old thread, but do any other users find that the 12-24 underexposes quite a fair bit?

Nope. Mine meters fine leh.

The extreme wide angle poses some issues with exposure metering. You need to do some experiments to understand how your camera meters in its various modes with the lens.

Its a little trickier compared to normal lenses, but once you have enough practice with it, you'll understand its quirks better. And it will expose correctly or as you desire it to.

I had that problem too when I first tried using it. But you'll get the hang of it.

Thanks for the reply KangS. Really useful.

Found out for my copy that at the wide end, I need to dial in about +0.7 -> +1 stop EC to get it exposed nicely, otherwise, it tends to expose for the highlights.

Zooming out towards 24, exposure is fine without any compensation :)
