Just picked up the FE 55/1.8. Quick question for those who got it

Try to pay a visit at Funan, or call MSColor to negotiate. May even be cheaper than $1250. Not worth buying a used set with no warranty at this price.

Haha yep..i tried to PM and email mscolor..they say only through phone then they will disclose the price...like so secretive like that haha..i'll wait lah..maybe in a few months..shops will be throwing stocks because no one buy hehe

last i heard, sgd was 1288...is it lower now? if i actually drops to around 1.2k, then it's no point buying overseas anymore..you don't save much and lose your warranty

i got it locally for just a little less than 1.2k for the 55f1.8 from one of the stores in funan.

Wow... that's very GOOD NEWS for hiadees here waiting to hoot a 55FE!

BBBBBBBB..........................

If local set with full warranty is less than $1,200, this will completely eliminate all the grey overseas set without warranty.

You should probably see the overseas sets selling below $1K for used set.

Y U even wanna bother to try bro? Sharpness is overrated ma... Post Process all d way can liao... Haha

Try negotiating with the sellers at the BNS. They have to sell below $1k now, and better sell soon before they start making losses.

You not selling your 55FE... So not about you. Just that the arbitraging scenarios that some sellers who bought cheap grey sets from overseas and selling here at good profits even after using, is not possible anymore.

If local set is less than $1.2k, I guess no one will be keen to buy a used grey overseas set with no warranty for anything above $1k. Not worth it for minor savings, and worry for the inherent risks in the future.

Unless it is sold below $1k for unused set, that will be a different story.

Haha. I know la. Such a great lens to use for lazy shooting. Sub 1k for a grey set is on d horizon. Inevitable as d local street price is getting lower.

I was in Osaka early this week and the price of a local set is roughly same as SG price. But if you remove the tax and additional shop discount the price is awesome. For those willing to buy oversea and ok without local warranty price in Japan is very good.

This lens is great no question at f1.8 it's very sharp already sadly not the lens I need so I skip it, the one I wanted 2470/4 was a big let down.

Sales tax in japan gonna hike to 8% in april and 10% to follow in the coming year. Not sure if this will affect global pricing on the "made in JP" sony lenses but during the nex5n/7 days there was price adjustment on certain lenses like the sel18200 which went up a fair bit. I bought my lens in jp a few weeks back too , good pricing aside, it's my personal belief that the Qc standards for their local market seem to always be a tad better. That said, it's purely based on my own assumptions n experiences.

Price of lenses here are strictly controlled by sony sg n theres only that much discount a local dealer can give cuz of "watchdogs". The cost to cost price for local retailers is very close to the best price i was quoted and i can say its not far off from what some bros here have been offered after factoring in the 7% gst.

I wont disclose the FE55 price the shop quoted me after tourist tax (5% only strange, Osaka different taxation?) and shop discount XX% :-). And from my local friends they said that shop is not really cheap.. One of the bro here knows how much the shop offered me even him was saying that's an awesome price that I should grab it.

Sadly this I have too many 50's and this is not the lens I need now...

actually bro I am at the point going to buy it when the shop gave me their very best price for me was very irresistible but then again I don't need this lens (now) what I need a good travel lens like 24-70 but the 2470 FE mount has is not worthy of its price :-) maybe if they sell 50% less I may have gotten it hahaha. Was contemplating of getting Canon Lens as the shop have metabone adapter but it's freaking more expensive hehehe.

But I must say the lens is awesome sharp wide open and small also

Sony is very strict with newly launched products, but not as strict after that, when supply is abundance. Just like RX1 when it was launched.

For 55FE, some local shops are selling below $1.2K and I think it is already quite fair as compared to initial launch of $1.35k.

At least, this is a decent price to buy with local warranty, and don't have to grab an overseas set which is nearly around $1.2k.

hey bro its 5% now actually and 8% in april. Jp is pretty open with prices, can always get price lists easily online or over the phone. The best street price i've seen there thus far is about 81000yen therebouts with local japan warranty for the fe55. Some people might not be comfortable dealing with smaller denki shops, can always go to the bigger retailers like yodobashi/b.i.c . Gotta pay a little more at bigger retailers but the good thing with buying with big retailers is u get points that u can use as cash rebates for your following purchases ( right now 10 % rebates in the form of points ), so for example if u pay 219000yen for the a7r, u get back 21900 points which can be used as a 21900 yen rebate for next purchase . If you're a frequent traveller, its nice to have a point card and keep it for ur future purchases. Much better than the 5% tax rebate tourist get. If u dont wanna keep the points can negotiate to use it as a straight discount. If you choose to claim 5% tourist tax rebates at the store, i dont think can get the 10% rebates in the form of points from those big retailers.

A good tip for comparing prices in japan is that amazon japan usually sells at close to as low as u can get within the country for stuff like lenses.

That's why i'm still resisting until today.. i hear nothing but good things about this lens..
Honestly, if it were f1.4, i wouldn't think twice..sometimes you just need the aperture in low light.
All i have is f2.8 on the 35mm now..it's not enough..i wanted something for low light...would've loved a 35 f1.4 actually.

I am going to try the 55 this weekend..maybe after trying, i lose the itch...or worse..it gets worse haha

Don't try it. This lens is not worth trying.... only.

You have to OWN it. Especially if you have a A7R. Perfect match.

Maybe i will just get a cheap 2nd hand SAL50F14 lens and use when required..Looks not that bad and it's f1.4 and i already have the la-ea4 so why not right :)
No need to spend 1k on this lens and not use often hehe
