John 3:16 don't recommend Pentax camera???

I always travel to the whole of japan ,Fukuoka , Osaka , Nagoya, tokyo,

I just bought a Pentax K5 in spore . Wanted to buy all My DA str lens in japan but found out it's really difficult to find pentax lens in almost all the camera shops . Especially the High end star lens.
BIC camera. Yodobashi. All can't find most said must order.

It's even more difficult to find tamron, sigma , tokina lens for pentax.

Have you guys considered simply that J3:16 is a small outfit and cannot possibly stock everything, of every brand? So they stayed in their niche product line-up and sell what they feel would represent the best value in terms of performance and availability.

To slam them for not carrying Sony, Oly and Pentax is akind to going to Epicentre and ask for Dell, or HP, or Lenovo. No Epicentre carries only Apple. Some may say rotten apples...

don't take offense but it's true that accessories is abit hard to get for pentax, as compared to canikon... but nonetheless, if u know what you need, then insist on it. :) they are probably providing a generalized statement on the basis of popularity and ease of access to acessories and the such.

its a bait and switch tactic.

they will tell u that they must confirm the sale before they go get u a copy from another shop and u must buy it... while u think, they may try to bamboozle u with their pitch on why pentax ah, C and N is better ah, etc etc...

pure rubbish.

they probably think that they're being "honest" by selling only established brands and steering customers to these products. coincidentally, these are also the products that gives them the best margins :bsmilie:

With any other shop i might believe it, but J3:16 doesn't do business that way.

I bought my Olympus E-5 from them, and they told me the same thing. They share stocks with another shop downstairs for less popular camera brands. I confirmed the deal and he got straight to ordering it for me. Even drove down to pick it up from the supplier before the next day.

If you were a small shop, i guess you would sell the best margins and highest demanded products right?
Although he gives me a earful about using Olympus whenever i go to his shop(playfully of course..), he has never asked me to switch back before.

2 Years ago...Mr you know who from John 3:16 labeled Pentax camera as Pantat (Backside in Malay)...

I bought a canon...used it for awhile...but get no satisfaction...there wasnt a "draw me to the camera" factor...

then K7 prices went down...

and the rest is history and I never looked back

that is not the issue. nobody expects them to be a superstore. there are many small shops all over singapore that only carry the most popular brands.

but how come we are only having a good laugh over them here and now? :bsmilie: i'm not complaining that ah kow electronics at my house downstairs don't have pentax.

i personally have no problems with their inventory. pretty neat if u're a C / N user. but their sales tactics raises eyebrows to me.

I was at funan today, scouting for Pentax k-r.
Went into John 3:16 and asked the guy how much was the shop selling it at...
He told me that he doesn't recommend Pentax cameras to his customers, i got curious so i asked why. He then replied me smth about pentax accessories are hard to get. (and smth about flashes which i forgot) Got out of the shop without asking anymore questions..

The other shops that i went to were either OOS or dont have the colour i want :(

Try Alan Photo in Sim Lim Square. They have lots of Pentax with mind boggling array of colours.

u can believe whatever u want :) good that u've found a shop u can work with for your equipment needs.

i just won't touch them with a bargepole :bsmilie:

Leave the bible out of this. You can discuss about sale ethics and all that, but leave religion out of this. How would the Muslims like it if we joke about their Koran? It's not funny & I'm not smiling. :nono:

My cousins who stay in Japan and know nuts about cameras can easily get less common Sigma 100-300/4; FA*85/1.4; FA*80-200/2.8; Takumars; AFA1.7x, etc, when I asked for their help to get those. Try MAP CAMERA, though I do remember that they bought from BIC or another of the larger chain stores before.

No problems with stock. No one is slamming them over that if you read the threads. What is criticized here is the sales tactics and well known bias practiced by them.
Like as if you entered a Liverpool pub with a ManU T-shirt :bsmilie:

I don't know how the Gestapo got involved :bsmilie:
Certainly don't know how its involved in religion.
Oh yeah. Camera brand is a religion.
Maybe you can suggest they change the shop name......

It really depends on what we need lah.

Sure, C & N cameras, lenses and brand-specific accessories are more common and easier to find.

But what if I want small, compact, near Leica-quality primes? There's only one brand to go for that then.

After all, just 3 years ago, I myself was a beginner who didn't know much about DSLR photography. But I did my own research online and offline for what suits me best. And I ended up with Pentax, even though I had no inkling of the differences between a prime and a zoom (and initially even wanted to get a all-in-one 18-200 lens.)

I guess what I want to say is: No retailer can be totally depended upon for advice, because they're all out for themselves in the end. And for us here who uses Pentax, it means we really, really, really thought about it -- which already says something about us in a subtle way. It's too easy to just go with the Big Two otherwise.

Cheers!

are you refering to pentax? I'm just curious to see what output pentax can produce, because if I did not started out with the dark side (dad's influence) I may very well be a pentax user already.

Yes, I'm referring to high-end Pentax primes which are unique in terms of focal length and size: ultra-compact, sharp, high-quality build and optics (with all metal barrels). They're arguably the best street shooter lenses around, the bodies too.. besides the Leica ones (which is on a whole different level anyway, price-wise at least).

Just google for "DA Limiteds" or "FA Limiteds" to see their size and looks (very 'pretty'!).

And as for output, let the photos speak for themselves.. just look around my photo gallery for samples (almost all my photos are taken using Pentax primes), or the photo galleries of the Pentaxian community here.

Cheers!

Pentax is rather popular in Japan ... you have to do some leg work and walk around Akihabara ... I was at Yodabashi in Osaka and saw a wide array of Pentax stuff including the K-5 ... I was just there middle of last month and got back last week.

Most of the time it is much cheaper to get cameras via internet order and ask for COD ... if you know how to speak Japanese have a foreign registration pass and local address ... if not ask a Japanese friend to buy for you .. some online stores allow pick up at their designated spots

For the K5 with 18-55mm lense kit only around SG$1600 ... the one with 18-105 kit lense only around SG$2100 ... Most of their camera stuff are cheaper (much much) cheaper than in SG ... only prob is you must know where to buy .... otherwise if you just go to those big stores like Yodabashi or BIC, their prices are much much higher ... you can try kakaku.com ... they have the most up to date prices and list of store around Japan ... please note most of them are online shops ... they do not have a retail shop ... but a collection office.

Well as for warranty = NONE ... hahah unless u know how to speak Japanese and ask for international warranty (depends on luck, but most probably not)

The same can be said for lenses, you can find a wide range online and order accordingly ... their delivery is very prompt and fast ... I can attest as I bought some stuff via this means ... was rather happy because they delivered to my hotel (budget hotel ... hahaha)

And anywayz to thread starter ... next time anyone tell you Pentax hard to find stuff ... agree with them ...

BUT tell them on the much vaunted reviews of DPREVIEW.COM, the Pentax is the ONLY brand that got a GOLD award in 2010 for semi pro dSLR range ... no other semi pro dSLR in 2010 got a GOLD award. I think even in 2009 there wasnt a GOLD award given out for the semi pro range (I may be wrong)

Cheers

Can explain why u bring up the MUSLIM and KORAN in this statement? I wanna know. Thanks.

I like their service and the atmosphere, but I don't like their pricing policy (ie. they don't give as much of a "discount" off the MSRP). So I go there only when I want to buy the more-or-less "fixed price" items like Think Tank bags. :bsmilie:

Sit down read thru and think thru, Read more newspaper and mags. Still don't believe go shop look around, sure Canon and nikon very popular and well known due to their packaging and advertisement. If Pentax were to do something like them and earn more from you how would you feel? Of course clever people like to play abit hide and seek and once you seek from the PLATINUMS, I don't see newbies buying Cannot ON or Nicon anymore or even the SOH SOH-only. Seen alot of pentax pictures and even got their own Photogallery plus outings with so many good people around what you want more.

I dont own any pentax camera but I played for a couple of time... I loved it together with pancake lenses...

Many people have not got the chance to pick up and use a Pentax but once they do, it is very easy to like the camera for the compact size, intuitive controls and picture quality, not to mention probably being the "best bang for the buck" price/performance wise.

As to why John 3:16 choose not to carry Pentax, I guess those who have the inside line on the local photo trade probably know why. But I think it doesn't really matter all that much when there are other shops who are prepared to sell Pentax and who can offer just as good service and at better prices than John 3:16.
