Ask your friend why he/she thinks people are spending small (and some times large) fortunes on lenses and cameras which are very fast to AF. The faster the better...

MF is usually used for studio, sometimes macro or when you are framing a huge scene where your target focus is rather obscure. Otherwise, AF.

imo,pros use AF so they can get more shots,personally,i use both AF and MF,just that too lazy to use MF,but if I need to,I can and will,so basically,as the rest have already said,stay away from your friend,he doesn't know what he's talking about

"Using AF = noob" is a totally rubbish statement. Think your friend is the real one as he knows nothing abt using AF. If AF is for noobs, then current pro DSLRs and those high-end pro lenses all will revert back to the manual age, omitting the AF function.

If AF is only for noobs than the Professional DSLRs like the Canon EOS 1Ds Mk III and the Nikon D3X will not have any AF points on them.

Dont care what people say, concentrate on getting the best pic...
