so this is different from the Panasonic Lx 1/2 series whereby the wide angle works only for 16:9 shots?

then like that cannot print standard sized photos am i right?

haha. sorry for the very late reply :) not familiar with the panasonic so cannot comment on that. but the wide angle on canon applies to all format. (Based on testing on my fren 850IS) If wide format, then some portion along the top edge and the bottom edge will be cropped ( i think).

hope it helps

image quality wise for day shots,c an any1 comment on the F31d and Ixus 850 IS?

i know for night shots, Fuji beats it hands down.

Wide Angle

Fuji
Excellent day & night shots
Cheaper

:thumbsd:

I have both the Ixus 850IS and the Fuji F11 (predecessor of F31fd).

Image quality wise, I'm definitely happier with the Fuji for indoor shots. Outdoor shots with good lighting, the 850IS is slightly better in terms of less blown highlights and accurate metering. But both are excellent outdoors.

The Fuji is snappier to use and I find the buttons more user-friendly (The 850IS has a recessed button which is in the centre of the camera - hard to switch on with one hand. Also, you need to turn the mode dial to view the pictures. With the Fuji, you just press a button on the back, and can switch back to shooting mode just by half-pressing the shutter button).

IS is useful, but if you have smooth high ISO, you don't really need IS.

Size wise, I find the 850IS a little too small when shooting, although the feel is very nice when you just carry it around. I prefer shooting the Fuji. Fast, responsive, just the right size for my hands.

So why did I get the 850IS?

Well, it's got 28mm at the wide end. The Fuji doesn't. It's also got a viewfinder (but I must say a pretty lousy one). Most importantly, the F11 officially belongs to my wife, and I needed an excuse to get a new camera.

There's a HI-Auto ISO mode which basically does auto-ISO, except one stop higher for faster shutter speeds. Useful for situations when you don't like to worry about which ISO you're in.

The 850IS is great for video, because of the image stabilization. It takes 640x480 video at 30fps, and the video is very sharp and smooth. And with the wide angle, the video looks very fun and dramatic. Not sure about the Fuji, but you can take continuous video with the 850IS - up to 4GB of video I think. Great stuff.

^^ i thought the predecessor to F31 is F30?

Sold DMC-LX2 (1 month old) yesterday and bought Ixus 850IS from MS at $572 incl GST. 2GB SD card + digital kit from Canon.

Was just quoted $580, no further discount. Why this variation ?

Was told last week that Canon's 2GB and Digital kit bag freebies would end 15th Apr.
Checked the Canon site and really no more promo :sticktong
Some shops may still be giving away whatever stocks they have.
Canon may be reverting to the old gift of a multi-card reader....

That means the next best time to get a PnS cam is the next com show end May.
If u want an Ixus850IS now better be fast.
2GB SD normal speed went up to $24.50 from $23 in SLS.

The face detect is fun, looks like a tracking HUD following faces. :bsmilie:

hi all ,

i am thinking on if i shld get canon 850IS or fuji F30 ..basically i will be using it to shoot casual photo such as scenery or snapshot of friends .. and i might be also use it for taking photo for clothes or small objects such as accessories for my small e-commerce ..

can anyone advice?

one more thing, does the canon850IS offer manual controls?

TIA

^^ no manual control for Canon

Canon's attraction is the wide angle and IS

Fuji is great for indoor/night shots

Hi there, i'm intending to buy Ixus 850IS within the next 2 mths. Yesterday i saw in canon website now giving the promo @$649, free 2GB memory card till 27th May. Understand tht there will be a pc show exhibition in suntec 31st may-3rd june. Will the prices be even better and also goodies?
Anyone brought that cameras at exhibitions? how do the prices fair from outside dealers....
Thanks:)

$575 to $590 will get you the Ixus 850IS with all the freebies listed (2GB SD Card and Digital Camera Kit - mini tripod, cleaning kit etc) from some of the retail shops like Alan Photo, MS Color, etc.

Provided the promo is still on, of course.

I must say I'm quite disappointed with the image quality of mine. Needs a lot of post-processing to make it acceptable. But the video is good, and the 28mm is good.

current promo is S$550 with 2gb card. no more 7 in 1 bundle, as i checked yesterday.
hope this helps.:)

in wat sense u are disappointed with the image quality? lots of noise or image colour is not good? i'm quite interested in getting this cam, but quite worried abt image quality. i'm currently a sony user, so now wanna give canon a try cos apparently the image quality from canon is better than sony, but i've got to give up the battery indicator and zoom indicator.

as far as i've read from reviews, the new DIGIC III processor compromise on image quality to reduce noise at ISO 200 and above, but if i generally stay below that, should be ok right?

Thank you for all infos. But sad, no more bundles. I was looking forward to get it from MS. Rolexboy, may i know which location u called?:D

i comapred the f30 and ixus850 side by side. at ISO100, 200, hardly a visible difference. At ISO400, the ixus starts to get muddy and splotchy. At ISO800, the f30 races ahead of the ixus850. At ISO1600, the ixus850 produces unprintable photos whilst the f30 still allows for a decent 4r print.
