It also covers up the battery and SD card compartment and the usb port which we need to access more frequently than we need to mount the camera on a tripod. ;)

I'd hate to squeeze the nice leather in between the body and tripod mounting plate. :bsmilie::bsmilie::bsmilie: Similar style as my old lao pek film camera, Yashica FX-3. Once put on the camera cover, cannot mount on tripod as the cover itself is secured by screwing into the tripod mount.

Not that I intend to buy the E-P1, but I am interested in the technical aspects. I have 2 questions which hopefully can generate some interest and discussion;

1. With the LCD turn off, and composing through the hot-shoe attached viewfinder, what method and how is the E-P1 focusing? I would think that the camera is still focusing using contrast detect AF.

2. Since the m4/3 is a mirror-less design, does 'Anti-Shock' (Olympus' name for mirror lock-up) in the E-P1 still serves it's purpose?

1.Yes it is CDAF
2.Never saw that in the menu of the E-P1

1) I find the viewfinder pretty useless. The 17mm is about the easiest FL to estimate the framing and there is no information display at all with the VF. The LCD and AF system are independent.

2) Yes... my hands contributes loads of shake.

I was doing some macro today. The 'Anti-Shock' with OIS off made a lot of difference. But this is high magnification work. The function seems to prep the shutter first and release after 2 secs. Rather than c0ck and release in the regular mode.

I am clam-like. As in "happy".

Just got my silver dual lens kit for S$1,500!

Now I have to see how to get my neck retracted...!

Bwahaha!

Hi Pixman, there's stock in already? Where did you buy from if you don't mind sharing?

I was told by John 3:16 (didn't get mine from them) that the distributor has stock of the white dual lens kit.

I prefer not to reveal where I got mine from because it was a previously reserved set that was very kindly released to me. Hope you understand.

Thanks!

1. Thanks, that means there will no improvement in focusing speed then.

2. It is in the menu - See the manual pg 61, 106, 116

Has anyone had any luck getting filters for the kit lenses yet? I was only able to get a B+W UV filter (non-coated) for the 37mm lens from CP, but I'm thinking of getting the Hoya HD UV filters and polarizers (37mm and 40.5mm). Neither B&H nor Adorama have them, and they have very erratic stock of coated B+W and Heliopan too.

For Hoya, it seems that it would be cheaper to get the filters locally rather than from the US stores? The Hoya web page says the HD filters are only available in 52mm-82mm, so prob no luck there.

Does anyone know if Cathay has the B+W 37-52mm and 40.5-52mm step up rings?

I have asked most of the popular camera shops. 40.5mm step up rings are virtually impossible to find.

You can always get much cheaper third party ones from ebay. I did. ;)

True? Untrue?

True for some, especially those who prefer to live with the compromises that created the DSLR. Heck, even the full frame DSLR carries with it compromises -- sensor is only 35mm compared to a large format.

Still, such articles are good to forewarn people who might not know what they are getting into. There is simply not enough warnings against owning a DSLR (or PnS for the matter).

I personally prefer to live with the compromise that is the E-P1. It's sitting next to me at work where none of the DSLR's ever will be. I admit it's not been making any pictures for 3 days in a row already but it will definitely see action this evening.

It's what you choose to live with.

All very true. Why can't they just stick a crapppy flash so I can do a little fill flash? Why does it have to be the bottom lot of lcds every single time? This time it's worse because u rely on the LCD for the most important functions. The mediocre kits lens is disposable. Unfortnately there doesn't seem to be anything else better for a while.

You can always stick on the crappy FL14 flash if you want to do some fill-flash.
As an owner and user of the E-P1, I actually don't find the 14-42mm and 17mm kit lenses mediocre or disposable at all. As far as kit lenses go, they are very good in my opinion. What's more, they are sized to match the E-P1. If people want Leica/Zeiss optical quality, then they must be prepared to pay Leica/Zeiss prices.

aparrently you are not Olympus E-P1's target customer then. just use something else then.
