Is the Tokina AF 12-24mm good?

personally owned the 12-24 nikkor
sigma 12-24 and sigma 10-20

currently using sigma 10-20

the nikkor 12-24 more contrast but the contrast can be enhanced with PS. so no issue
but sigma 12-24 is full frame AND it's perfect. no distortion. all lines are 100% straight. the ONLY wide angle with no distortion.

sigma 10-20 has got distortion from 10-11.5/11.7mm.
thereafter it is as straight as sigma 12-24.

the only reason why i let go sigma 12-24 is for the emergency 2 mm. but otherwise i use from 12mm onwards usually.
yes, i actually look at the lens to make sure i am at 12mm.

in terms of CA(chromatic aberation) both sigma is better than the nikkor 12-24

the ONLY reason to get nikkor 12-24 is the F4 constant.

in regards to build of sigma 12-24. it's 1 piece aluminium with built-in aluminium hood.

10-20mm is quite plastic.

IIRC e Sigma 12-24mm cant attached filters at e front. Instead u r to use those gel type at e rear. Think diz is troublesome... Diz is one of e reason I avoided e Sigma 12-24mm (not e 10-20)

Not an issue, I use rectangular filters. Don't worry about the bulging front element, its really not easy to accidentally touch the element. Alot of lenses are unable to take front filters too... 16/2.8, 14/2.8, 10.5DX, 200/2 VR..etc

A word about shooting wide, if you intend to shoot many people lined up, 12mm is way too wide, lots of rectilinear distortion, and not very good for those faces near the edge. This is a fact. At 24mm, you get 35mm equivalent FoV which is old SLR wide angle, and this produces pretty acceptable rectilinear distortion. For landscapes or art works without people, or for architectural effects, 10mm will be great. But 10mm to 20mm will mean that you'll get about 30mm equivalent FoV at the tele end, and that's still pretty wide and pretty distorted. Consider this carefully.

On the side, I have heard of clients being quite pissed when every shot taken is from a 12-24mm during the wedding, resulting is very distorted faces in family group pictures. There are times whereby wide is not everything.

just got this lens! looking forward to testing it this weekend. pray the weather is good

haha... have fun! :)

i believe someone has posted this link already. however, for those who missed it, have a look at (IMO) an excellent user perspective review of some of the more popular WA lenses. they did a review of the tokina 12-24.

hey thanks for ur comment! it makes sense too...

i did a wedding shoot using canon 20D with 17-35mm... it's not very wide so i have to keep moving back (or bending backwards if no space behind me) to shoot the table pple with the couple.. the distortion is minimal... so i tot of getting 12-24 would be better for cramp spaces... wonder if shoot at 15mm will the distrotion be bad?

Best to move back and shoot. I assure you that 'artistic' distortion is not liked by most family people, especially when they see their heads stretched diagonally and their bellies stretched horizontally. That's what wide angles do.

CP still have stock before the turn of the year... below S$900 + freebies. It's safer to call them first? Did you consider the 10-20mm (Sigma)?

did they say they hv stock...??

then that *bleep* quoted me higher la...

read wat cathay quoted me:

1) Tokina AF 12-24mm F4 - AT-X124 AF PRO DX @S$1150
2) Sigma 10-20mm f/4-5.6 EX DC HSM @S$ 830

Please note that the above price(s) are subjected to 5% GST
(does it mean that GST not counted in yet?)

Means you need to add a further 5% to whatever they quoted you. If you're not happy with the price and think it's too expensive, scout around some more or wait till got stock then buy, when there is limited stock to go around... that could be one reason for the price increase?

No need to rush if not urgent right, hold on to the money and buy at good price is my advice.
