is nikon sturdier?

I see some people complaint about the durability of the 70-200 VR. They said after 3 years of usage, the electronic parts encounter problems make it unable to activate VR function or sth like that. I really want to get a 70-200 VR but now I am thinking of the 80-200.

Anyone has any comment?

if don need the vr and the extra 10mm, 80-200 is a good choice. its quite a good piece of glass. personally i prefer the 80-200 to the 70-200vr. both in performance(just a little slower as it does not have a built in motor)and build(its solid) vs price(vr cost alot more).

but it depends on the individual though. go to the shop and see which 1 u like more lah.

Is this thread for SLR only?

My canon A40 powershot die on me around 2 years of use.
My nikon coolpix simply prefer to suck my battery flat fast instead of dying on me!

I would say that for the professional bodies, canon's 1s are actually on par with Nikon's 2x/2h,1x,etc etc... Currently use both, and they simply refuse to die.

Now lenses on the other hand.... :think:

for bottom of the line stuff (ie. d40x vs. xti) i say xti. not because i own it, but when i was looking for a camera the flash on the d40x would not stay down! i went to best buy to try out the cameras! i dont know about the others but i can tell you that from what i saw made me go towards canon! well i dont think this is just a nikon problem because there are some who claim the xti's flash wont pop up!

Dear Romeo... Are you sure that you are not using the Auto / Programmed-vario when you tried the d40x? It is a technical issue. Unless you are using P/A/S/M modes, you cannot control the flash poping up. Once there is insufficient light, it will pop up.

I guessed that you are new to photography. Enjoy yourself with your new camera!

I think every brand have its pro and cons. My 1st SLR was a Nikon F601, my DSLRs however are Canons, 350D with me for 2 years and still in mint condition when I sold it, my 2nd hd 1D2 still as going strong. My Canon EOS3 is still in mint condition without any scratchs at all. I'm using a 10 year old Canon lens (500mm) and is in 9/10 condition external and 10/10 internal.

Since we had spent so much on our equipment, we should also learn to take care of them.

as long as I can use the body to hammer someone and yet not break the body, it is a sturdy. the D2s can do that and the 1D series can too. who cares which is sturdier?

been there, done that... both in the MIR forums together with FM, photo.net, sportsshooters, etc etc.. It's not to put down the quality of any particular brand, (hey my nikons break too) but just to vent my frustration when my equipment fails after a very familiar timeframe, and to get help...

If your stuff last you forever, how is the company going to survive? :bsmilie: It's all about cost-cutting and profitability. You probably hear more about Canon because their user base is much larger, but it's all the same: Nikon, Sony, Pentax etc etc.

1 thing i don reali like about nikon is the high price of their lense and the unavailability of lense.

friend, nikon lens is famous for its tough build and their engineer has been spending a lot of time on researching on boke, abbreviation sort of optical improvement. off kos agreed with you their pricing is sucking high until today, but that is where they preserve their quality versus sec hand value

canon? their lens don preserve any good second hand value..be it u like it or not..its a fact.

Then you might as well talk about Sony/Minolta as well. I'm using a 22-year-old Minolta 70-210 f/4 lens on an A700 and it works perfectly, with fantastic bokeh. I can guarantee this combo is good for self-defense as well. Even the vertical grip for the A700 is made out of magnesium alloy.

Nikon, Sony... Almost the same sensor, really.

But, in a N vs. C comparison, I'd have to agree that N is sturdier, except for the D40 series which feels like a toy (same as C 400D though)

i did not say minolta system is no good...minolta metering at least is one of the best.
